    Default Newbie clarification needed

Ok...you have shaving mugs and you have shaving dishes. Please tell me - if you are putting the puck of soap in the mug, do you use the same mug for whipping up the later? Or do you use the dish for whipping and the mug solely for soap storage?

I purchased a Conk shaving mug with their soap assortment and the mug seems too deep for me to get my fat hand into and whip up lather. I see some shorter mugs available, like the vintage Old Spice type.

I guess I'm just dense or confused as to what is what. Please advise.

I'm aware of that. Is the method to whip it in the mug as well?

you're not dense at all and it is confusing. Some of the items being sold today are not as well designed as in the days when straight or de were the only choices.Like you I bought a so called "shaving mug" and gave it to the wife for a planter and bought another far better designed old spice mug on eBay

And to answer the rest of your question, it depends on the soap. With some softer soaps I lather right on top of the puck but with a quality soap like Tabac I prefer to build the lather on my hand, face or in another bowl

So do you whip the lather in the Old Spice mug? If so, do you then park the puck in it after the shave? Sorry for the constant questions, but my sink area is a bit cluttered.

Unfortunately, not as cluttered as it's going to be when the AD's hit!

I have a small rubber mug that I hold my puck of soap in. I use it to load up the bristles with soap and then apply to my face, but I have noticed that some lather forms right on top of the soap. I see no reason why you couldn't build your lather right on top of the soap.

I park the puck in the old spice bowl and leave it but some like a rotation and use stuff like rubbermaid bowls to hold an assortmant of soaps. My sink area is very limited so I try to contain my hobby to a few choices. But, vintage old spice mugs are cheap on ebay,no need to limit yourself to just one!!!!

You can do what you want with the soap. If you want to build lather on top of the soap where it lives and keep it in there, then, yes you can. If you want to do it in a separate bowl, also possible. Finally, face lathering would be the last known (to me) method.

If you want to build your lather on top of the soap, I would do like you would do it in a bowl. Hold the water a bit and it should work fine.

Whatever container suits your fancy will work.....as long as 'the dish doesn't run away with the spoon'...heh, heh.

Thank you all for the input. I've followed the instructions in various threads. I had some C&E soap in a wooden holder, loaded my brush off of it and just stored it in there. I then have a ceramic bowl that I whip my lather in and keep warm in the sink. I just wasn't sure if there was a one-container fits all method.

    Thanks again all.

This is one of those YMMV things. Some prefer to lather on the soap in the mug and others simply load the brush and transfer to another medium for lathering. I do both depending on the soap.

There are no right answers. Many soaps come in a form fitted bowl in which there is no room to lather, which suits me just fine, because I like to face lather. Others like to bowl lather, and they get themselves an appropriate set up. Just do what works best for you and your face. If it's working for you, then you're doing it right.

    Enjoy!

You can take a Tupperware or any kind of microwavable plastic and melt the soap in there, after that take the liquified soap and put it in any bowl or mug more switable for your "Andre the Giant HANDS". LOL.

I have been wet shaving for about 4 months now. I like to get the soap a little wet, then load the brush from my soap straight from whatever container I am using to hold my soap, then build the lather on my face. I use my shaving mug just to hold my brush. What i like to do is get my mug really hot with ht water, then let it sit in a sink surrounded buy hot water, so I can put my brush in it and keep my brush, and lather warm between passes.

Try taking a look at mantic59 on you tube. His videos are great, and have helped me tremendously.

I only use a bowl for making a lather when I am using a ream.

I park the puck in a mug. Sometimes I lather right in the same mug holing the soap and other times I lather in a seperate bowl or straight to my face. It just depends on how I feel. Not really sure there is a wrong way so long as you enjoy the lather and shaves!

I'm still a newbie, but noticed that if I have a puck of VDH soap in the bowl/mug and build the lather there, it gets used much faster. No way can I convince my wife to let me have two bowls in the bathroom, so I started hand lathering which worked pretty well. I'm currently using Proraso, though, so am not having the problem.
