try a swede or an IP if you're gonna stray away from your feathers. still very sharp but twice as smooth!

Try a Swede, Super Iridium, Kai, or 7 O'Clock Yellow box for other examples of sharp blades in the same vein as Feather.

Don't try a Swede because thats going to end up being your favorite blade and when you go to order some more only to find out they have beean discontinued, and you have to start your blade hunt again and find out that your least like blade is now your favorite blade i.e. the feather. I would try the 7 o' clock yellow Gillette, the Greek BIC's, and the Astra superior's. Sorry for the mile long sentence.

I wonder if, for a newbie such as myself, using a Feather improves the technique? Like, out of respect for the blade's reputation you're very careful to use no pressure and to avoid other corner-cutting maneuvers?

I would also try Astras if I were you. I find them almost as sharp as a Feather, and a little more forgiving. Also, they are A LOT cheaper: like $18 for 100 blades on WestCoastShaving.

Personally, I think the razor does more than the blade for learning good technique. For over a year I used my Merkur classic open comb with a Feather - flinging it on my face like a manic painter slathering paint on a canvas. I referred to it as my razor acrobatics. Then, I bought my beloved Slant - and still using a Feather - then I learned real technique.

I was suggesting not that the razor or the blade, per se, may make a difference, but the fear of them...

Wait until you try new Feathers, you'll really like them.....

You're asking for disappointment to go from a Feather to a Dorco. I actually feel Dorcos get a bit of a bad rap on this forum. I've expressed this before (packaging, name etc...). Notwithstanding that, I think the IP Crystals and Red Pack Personnas are clearly superior. So you must give those a whirl. I've had good, not great experiences with the Astra Superior (I prefer their Keramik line, others here feel the opposite), the 7 0'clock Yellows are fabulous. No question, less expensive than the Feathers but considerably more so than the IPs or Red Pack. Have fun, you really can't go wrong with any of these.

I have found BICs to be just fine as a replacement for Feathers (when I run out somewhere around 2015). If Astras were more consistent I would recommend them as well.
