    Default First Straight Shave

Picked up a shave ready Korn 5/8ths hollow ground on the shave mall and followed the tutorial as close as possible for my first shave. Still trying to get the angle right. I did not attempt to go against the grain, and I probably won't for quite a bit.

Suffered from a very very light bit of razor burn (went away in less than an hour). Picked up some after shave for next time as my post shave with the DE was a bit of astringent.

I know I am going to have to hone this thing eventually. How often does a straight need a hone and if I am planning to shave 3 time a week, should I get more than one straight?

I nicked myself once early, and it must have been just barely as it stopped bleeding before I finished even finished shaving. I think I am still a little "razor" shy, but I like it so far, just don't want to make a mistake and end up with a grisly scar

    congrats on your first shave!

if youre using a couple of times a week, baring some damage, it should last 6-8 months before you need a touch up.

Keep at it, pretty soon you'll be getting the best shaves of your life.

    congrats on the success

you didn't mention but I hope you are stropping it before every shave, doing that correctly and as mdunn mentioned if you don't damge it you should be set for a few months

"should I get more than one straight?"

You do realise on which forum you asked that, don't you?

YMMV, but if you shave with the same razor only three times a week you should only need to hone once a year. That is, if you are stropping before each shave and in my case, in addition, I own a four sided pasted strop with which I will use when I begin to feel the razor getting dull.
