Building lather with tallow-based soap vs. glycerine-based soap

I am trying to learn to build good lather from soap. I've watched the Mantic video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7Aj9vwrtc

multiple times, and I've read the B&B tutorial

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=21136

over and over. I'm using a new Omega boar brush from B/S/T. So far here is what I've learned:

1. Face lathering works for me pretty well with Tabac (tallow-based).
2. Bowl lathering works for me pretty well with VDH (glycerine-based).
3. Bowl lathering does not work particularly well for me with Tabac, and it is a lot harder than with VDH (seems to take longer to get anywhere). I think I can finally get decent lather in a bowl if I work at it long enough, but not great lather.
4. Lathering on the puck works well for me with some ancient Old Spice soap in a mug. I'm not sure I want to try lathering on the puck with an expensive soap like Tabac.

I have been practicing building lather, and I made 5 trial runs this evening.

One key step seems to be gauging how much soap to load on the brush before going from puck to lathering bowl. Mantic suggests a 3-second swirl. That doesn't work for me, especially with Tabac. I've tried to follow the guidelines in the tutorial, but apparently I am missing the mark somewhere.

Another key step seems to be gauging when to keep adding water and when to stop adding water.

Should I be doing things differently for a tallow-based soap like Tabac as compared to a glycerine-based soap like VDH?

Any advice or suggestions will be welcomed.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck
