    Default Astra vs. Derby blades...

Hello all,I've been lurking for a few weeks now trying to learn all I can about my new favorite hobby (never thought I'd view shaving as a hobby!)So after reading countless great reviews on here for both blades which one do you guys prefer?I've been using the walmart brand (believe me I know)to be honest they haven't been horrible atleast not coming from the "fusion" world.Last night I decided to order a 20 pack of the Derby's from Ebay. After I use those up I plan on trying the Astra's but my curiosity already has me wondering which is the better blade? For what it's worth I'm currently using a ss razor on my light to medium beard.I'll soon be getting the EJ 89L.thanks for any input...

    Welcome to Badger and Blade!

I've just started using the Astra SP courtesy of BullGoose here on the forum, and I've found it to be remarkably smooth. It's been a while since I used a Derby, as I've been alternating weeks of SE shaving with DE shaving (using red pack IPs and 99-cent-store Personnas). Heretofore, the Derbys have been my DE favorite, but if I keep getting shaves from the Astras like the last two, the Derbys may go to the bench. I've so far only used the Astra with my '40s SS (my go-to razor for first shaves with a new-to-me brand of blade), but I think I'll try the next one in my '59 Fatboy.

As in all things shaving, YMMV.

I like Derby's in all my razors except for the adjustables. In those I prefer the Feather.

You'll get a lot of different answers on which one is better. I started DE shaving with Derby's and found them to be somewhat inconsistent (some blades shave well, others were horrid). There are some on this forum that think the sun rises and sets on Derby's however.

Astra's on the other hand, have proven to be remarkably consistent and provide an excellent shave every time. They may cost a little more, but the results are well worth it. Astra's may never replace Feathers as my blade of choice, but they are a close #2.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met.

Yeah,I know as in most things everyone has their favorite.Just curious as to how they compare to eachother...Ofcourse I won't know which is my favorite until I try both but I am indeed impatient

The answer vary from person to person

One can be better than the other, it's always different. The sample pack is the best thing to do at first. A Derby might perform well for you in a razor and won't for someone else in a different razor. But that other person can change razor and it will be fine.

I prefer Astra to Derby but that's just me. They are both good performers but Astra is somehow smoother.

I also prefer Astras over Derbys. While both are plenty sharp, I find Astra superior in sharpness and smoother to boot.

+1. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to give any solid recommendations on shaving software or hardware because everyone's face gives different feedback. Having said that, I recommend the Red IP.

Derby's are fine, I just don't get a decent shave with them.

As far as Astras go, I like the Astra Keramic, find the Astra SP a decent blade, and won't shave with the Astra Stainless.
