Which is most effective: Alum, Witch Hazel, or Alcohol?

Which is most effective: Alum, Witch Hazel, or Alcohol as a disinfectant and astringent? Which do you prefer and why?

Does anyone use all three?

In my case, I prefer Alum. However, it's been a while since I used it. If I need something, I would probably use Witch Hazel because SWMBO swears by it!

I'm a big believer in WH.

I typically reach for witch hazel unless I have a cut, then I treat it with my styptic followed by witch hazel. However, I find that plain WH overdries my face, so I doctored mine with some aloe vera and glycerine. So far I'm happy with the results. Alcohol? Before I was diagnosed with cirrhosis, it went in my martinis.
