Harry Kalas Dies

Harry Kalas, the Phillies' Hall of Fame announcer, died at 1:20 p.m. today, the Phillies announced.

Mr. Kalas was 73.

He collapsed in the press box at Nationals Stadium in Washington at about 12:30 p.m. and was rushed to George Washington University Medial Center.

The cause of the death was not announced. Today's game against the Nationals will be played, but the team will not visit the White House tomorrow.

"We lost Harry today," David Montgomery, the team president, said. "We lost our voice."


As a life long Phillies fan listening to a game will never be the same. Some of my fondest memories are of sitting on the screened porch with my grandfather listening to Harry and Whitey announce the game.

My condolences to the Phillies family. Man, what a voice! He picked the right profession with those pipes.

I grew up listening to Harry Kalas announcing Phillies games. After I moved from South Jersey, any time I would catch a clip of his work on the radio, ESPN, etc. I would instantly be transported back to my younger days. After they won the Series last year, the first thing I did the next morning was find the clip of his call of the final out. It seemed to make it even more real than the night before. A bit more of my childhood died with Harry. Godspeed, sir.

He also did some work for NFL films, Campbells soup and some movies, I have listened to him for close to 40 years, he knew enough to let the game speak for itself and that every second didn't need to be filled with useless talk, yes the Phillies had a great year last year and a few others but for many of those years it was Harry Kalas and the late Rich Ashburn who made listening to and watching the Phillies enjoyable.

Indeed it is.

I have lived in Long Island for the last 25 years but I still hear him often because of NFL Films, Chunky Soup, and Puppy Bowl. His voice always brings back fond memories of my youth.

The first half inning of tomorrows Phillies broadcast will be silent in his honor.

You just made it worse. Toss in a "Lager", Turkey Hill Ice Cream, Lebanon Bologna, Lulu Paste, Scrabble, Shoofly Pie, Pat's Cheese Steak, Middlesworth and or Utz chips, Wise Markets, WaWa coffee, Funnel Cake form Knobles after a ride on the Phoenix, Saturday at Happy Valley, ride through Bald Eagle State Park, Hershey Park Afterdark, hell even a Primanti Brothers Sammy.

God I am depressed, Only been here only 3 months and homesick. Now I cant even listen to the voice.
