It could be a bit of both. Take TOBS for example ... all creams are great, but avocado seems a bit better in terms of lather and shave quality. The contents of the creams have to be different to get the different scents, so there could well be a difference.
But if you are new to wetshaving, for sure your lathering skills are going to be getting better. If you got a tub of 1805 and used it for at least a month or two straight, your lathering skills would doubtless improve enough that you could then go back to the Limes and see if it really is 'better' shave-wise for you.
