  1. Default Cheap-bastard-scuttle-alternative

    Hello Folks:

new here and while I am waiting for my DE and other supplies to get here I was looking around at what I could use to make my own scuttle. I am a cheap bastage so I don't really want to pay over $50 for a clay scuttle when I might be able to do one on my own for far less. I started at Walmart and looked for a violet pot, which I hear works well if you get the right size. Unfortunately, they were out. Not only a few left, I mean out. None.

So I looked at some custard cup things in the baking kinda section. I found a white Corelle cup thing for about 2.99 or so. These are CDN dollarz, FYI. So then I just needed something it could sit in and stay warm.

I couldn't find anything at W-mart so I headed to Canadian tire and basically started to stick my cup thing in every bowl/mug I could see. Anyway, I finally found a coffee mug that held enough water and the custard cup thing fit perfectly. I mean perfectly, like it was made for it. Let me post some pics (if I can figure out how).

Hope this works. Will let you know when I get my gear.

Nice! I usually just float a bowl or mug in the sink though. Either way looks like you've got a cheaper alternative!

Brilliant solution - and nice. I like when people like you find a good and cheap way to solve a problem. Any other innovative gents around here?

    Thumbs up

This is great stuff - what I am on the lookout for is an insulated thermos-style container and a heat conducting bowl to fit inside.

Yeah, I found a combo like that a Walmart (I think it was using the same ramakin bowl, too), the only problem is it isn't quite deep enough for anything beyond a small to medium brush. If you have something around the size of an EJ BBB and you face lather though, it should work great.

    Thumbs up Cheaper Yet

    That looks very nice.

I'd imagine for best thermal properties you'd want a metal bowl for the interior vessel and Styrofoam for the outer wall. That would be cheap and classy looking. SWMBOs everywhere will swoon at your ingenuity.

How about a buffet tray inside a styrofoam cooler!! Enough hot lather to shave a mammoth!

If you have the arm strength to whip all that lather up in the first place. Or you could just use one of those egg-beating handmixer things...hmm...

    Or...........
I just spent $400 on one of those big bench mixers with a rotating metal bowl to make my mrs happy.
If she doesn't use it to make me delicious food, into the bathroom it goes to make my lather

If you just want to keep the brush warm between passes a coffee mug that doesn't float works quite well in a sink of hot water. As good as a scuttle really but its not easy to find one that doesn't start floating. We've got a cabinet full of coffee mugs and after trying about ten of them I found one that worked. Its still messy taking the cup in and out of the sink but it will work.
