Gillette Single Ring 1904 patent razor

I just picked up another Single Ring, at least I think it's a single ring. However, the serial number is stamped in the middle section right above the open comb and not on the shaft of the bottom piece. Anyone ever seen that before?

Yup, completely normal. I think it was at some point in the "B" series or very early in the "C" series that they switched from the barrel to the guardplate.

Found one of these on the bay tonight -pretty nice razor- just badly listed. Wait it out so no one sees then go in for the save maybe. Not the style I would go for but it's rare I guess so re-sell otherwise if the shave is harsh. :001_smile

Wow this thread was started almost 3 years ago..................Yes this numbering location was normal from 1908 to 1929, in sleeve shaft or comb guard.

You don't need more than one of a razor! I have 2 triangular-hole Techs and 2 nice Fat Boys and feel I have too much. I haven't used the extras because then I'll have to clean them. I got my single ring for $7.50 w/ 2 other razors on the Bay. One was a Schick yellow handle Injector which turns out has become my favorite/easiest to shave with razor ever.

Your unmarked single ring could be a post May 1921 manufacture. I've got a few that were made after 1921 that have only the Gillette trademark stamp.
The other option is that you've got a handle from a set that was stamped on the barrel and a barrel from a set that was stamped on the head. The parts sometimes got jumbled around a bit.

Hey all. Seeing if I can revive this thread. I have a single ring with no stamp under the comb and no ID number anywhere on the razor head or on the shaft inside the barrel. Any ideas what the date might be? Here’s a few pics....

It was made in the '20s. They stopped putting serial number on the Old Type in 1921. I think the last year they made them was in 1928.

If I may, @Mlee might be absolutely correct. Another option could be it is from 1905-07(no Diamond stamp) with a stem from 1910-1920 if it is a true 102(thin cap) and not a 102a(thick cap). The 102a has a comb and cap that is actually thicker than the 102. The shoulder of the SR in the picture looks earlier than a 102a to the eye.

Hello,

the razor is pre ~1914 (no diamond or serial on comb). The inner tube is a later addition, it has a shorter stem, less pronounced step above the knurling and no serial. It could be post 1914 or a from a thick cap 102a.

This is true, I missed the part about no ID. I had thought about this but I was just going by the pictures.
