Default Went antiquing ... RAD continues

To kill some time this afternoon, I wandered around an antique mall near my house (north of Toronto) with my baby daughter. There were quite a few razors to be had, a handful of straights, a bunch of Ever-ready's in cases and the odd Gillette.

I picked up a few out of interest, perhaps to actually shave with or to PIF later on - none with any real collector value I wouldn't think since I didn't get any that had fancy cases or anything.

    1) Gillette Tech - same markings as my WWII Canadian Khaki sets. Made in Canada, PAT.CANADA and 1932 marked on it along with the Gillette diamond logo. Pretty good shape now but with some scrubbing bubbles and a once over with a toothbrush this will be in great shape.

    2) Gillette British Rocket Flare Tip - I have a soft spot for British Flare Tips so I picked this one up even though the jaws or TTO may be not working properly. Marked with Made in England, BRIT.PAT 694093 and the Gillette diamond logo. It also has J2 on the underside - what year would this one be??

    3) Gillette British Rocket - I could use some help identifying this further but I think it is a Rocket. It is in fantastic shape. Marked with Made in England and the Gillette diamond logo on the underside and inside only has PATENT PENDING. Is this a Rocket and what year would this one have been made??

Thanks for any help with the identifications and sorry, no pics yet but I will p0rn them when I get them cleaned ...

You know antiquing is the one word/thing that I figured I would never say/do.... Stupid RAD. I have plans to antiquing sometime soon too.

Hopefully I'll find some nice stuff like lots of you guys do :D

    Whoa, what have I done!

Mention the plan to go antiquing and people ask for pictures before you've even gone!

    I can relate .

Man, that's some good work!! Congrats.

I've hit several antique shops and two large antique/flea markets. The only things I've seen were a handful of either really expensive or really crappy looking straights which I know nothing about, and a very nice looking brass Gem with a white bakelite handle which I know almost nothing about. The guys at these shops keep telling me that DEs fly out the door as soon as they get 'em in.

It's THIRDEYE buying up all this stuff, I know it!! Damnit, from now on I should get the eastern part of the state and you should get the western part!!
    Is this your homework, Larry?

I've been experiencing the exact same thing. Ask about safety razors, the reply is "well, 2 guys came through here yesterday and cleaned us out!" Thats happened at a solid 80% of the places i've visited.

Oops! Sorry about that. I have hit every point within 250 of here and Dallas is smack in that circumference.

    Nice score!!

I thought I had a good one today. I was in an antique store and in a case stuck in the middle of some weird cosmetic stuff was a Wade & Butcher straight box in absolutely great shape. I start vibrating a little then try to get it under control and have that "excuse me, I'm not really interested but, could I see that" disinterested look about me. The lady picks it up and this gawl dern Durham Duplex falls out the down facing side where there was nothing (a 3 sided box!). The Duplex was rusty as crap and I have nothing good to say about the two I already have. So....not a great hunting day!!

But you guys in Toronto!!! Easterners, sheesh.

I'm going to hit two more shops up north of the city this afternoon. Maybe I'll have some luck as they may not be as picked clean as the ones downtown.

Anyone else affected with RAD, ASAD, etc., found antiquing (poaching) in my section of Eastern NC, will be dealt with severely. (Forced to use cartridge razors!)

So I had some luck this afternoon at a few other antique shops. There was a really nice looking straight but they are not really my thing at the moment so I left it for someone else I did pick up two more Gillettes though ...

    1) Canadian Tech - really nice condition. PAT.CANADA, Made in Canada, 1932 and the Gillette diamond logo are on the underside along with Z4. What I particularly like about this one is that the whole top face has a large Gillette logo etched into it which makes quite different than the others I have picked up recently. $20.

    2) 1958 Flare Tip "TV" - near mint condition after some scrubbing bubbles but it looked rough in the shop. The inside is marked with PAT.NOS. ON PKG. and the underside has REG US, PAT OFF, Made in USA and the Gillette diamond logo. It also has D3 on the underside. I have another TV coming in the mail from a B&B'er and I hope it is as nice as this one. $10.

Now for a few quick pics...

The only crappy part of the day is that when I got home I found out that there is a really big antique mall about 2 miles from where I was. I guess I know what I'll be doing next weekend!!
