I noticed from the SOTD threads that a lot of you use both splashes and balms as aftershaves for the same shave. Do you apply the splash then apply the balm? Or the balm first, then followed up by the splash?
Thanks all.

Hi Timmy,
...for me, first splash then balm and the balm only for a little bit more moisturization.hope that helps...![]()

Interesting, I actually do the opposite, I apply the balm first then the splash. But I let the balm soak into my skin (about 10 minutes) before I apply the splash.
I'm curious, why the splash first?

Unfortunately I use the splash first technology... For an instant the image of Johnathan Swift's Gulliver came to mind

I utilize the splash first method as well. I do so for two reasons: 1) I really like the feel of the splash right after the shave 2) one of the biggest benefits of the splash is to tighten/close pores. The aftershave can't really do this if applied some time after the shave, and after a moisturizer has already been used. I apply a balm about 10 minutes after I do the splash to moisturize.Originally Posted by webguru24
If you do the balm first, then splash, you are ending with the product that tends to dry out skin as opposed to moisturize it.
That's my reasoning, at least

Not trying to high-jack the thread, but I noticed the "close the pore" phrase that I see quite often. Why is it so important to close the pores?![]()

Ah, I see your reasoning Drew. I'll give that a try tommorow morning and see how that goes. Thanks.

Definitely splash before balm for me. I now keep my witch hazel in the refridgerator so it is a good wake up call!

after shave , skin is vulnerable to dirt and bacteria. toning (either with a WH or alcohol splash) helps to tighten...not close the pores and ward off said impurities. i find my skin to be much healthier and supple when its been toned in this manner.Originally Posted by Jimmy Gee
however, I don't always follow a splash with a balm....many of the splashes I enjoy contain glycerin.
Splash and dash (of balm)

I am a balm before splash guy. No reason why. That is just how I have been doing it. I think I will try splash before balm to see how it works.

Groovy, I've been using my splash first or just by itself, but the past week or so with the weather getting so much drier, I've been needing some more moisture so I've added L'Occitane ASB to my shaving ritual to moisture things up. Thanks all for the input. It makes me feel better that most agree with the way I had been doing things. Thanks.![]()

I didn't mention this earlier, but I probably should have, what I've found best for my face is actually what I have termed and aftershave sandwich.
First Aftershave splash, then an ASB, and finally another coating of splash. For my face it's the best way to go, at least so far.![]()
