Thread: Hats

    Default Hats

One of the things that really saddens me to see virtually gone in the modern age, is the wearing of nice hats. (And no, I do not mean baseball caps.) Of course, here in the U.S. we have some rather silly ideas about the wearing of hats, but I'll leave that rant for another day. Anyway, I just splurged and bought this really great red Homburg. (Picture below.) I realize I'm running the risk of being seen as some sort of gangster wannabe, but darn it, I like it. I also considered a kelly-green bowler, but on further reflection decided that wannabe gangster was a preferable image to leprechaun. (An effect that would be further enhanced by the fact that I'm quite short.)

Anyway, I've always loved hats so I'm wondering if any of you are hat fans as well. What is your favorite hat? Let's see some pix. (Would that me millinery porn?)

I guess hat-wearing was trained into me from an early age. That would be my grandpa's Fedora I'm wearing in this picture.

I just bought this one from Tilley Endurables, but I haven't worn it yet. I will probably only wear it in the summer while sailing, fishing or walking.

My hat collection consist of a Seattle sombrero (love it) and a boonie style hat for long-days-in-the-sun wear.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. So I asked my girlfriend what kind of hat I could pull off, and she told me a fedora. I think that is permission to get one, don't you?

She even said one with a little feather in it, but I think I might pass on that. Although, that red one is quite stylin'

I always have loved a good fedora. Right now I own a crappy black wool one, but someday (soon please) I'm going to get a nice fur felt fedora (vintage would be nice). I'm not sure how well I pull off a fedora but it's the only kind of hat I'm going to put on my head damn it!

I enjoy hats as well. I have 2 Stetsons and my favorite hat is an Akubra Banjo Patterson. Really enjoy them with casual wear.

Worse yet, a wanna be pimp. As long as you and more importantly your Wife likes it. You may have to change your screen id though.

My favorite hat would be a Resistol western in black (IIRC mine is 5x) in the Winter (for dress) and western straw in the Summer.
I also have a "newsboy" style tweed w/goretex liner for the cold/wet, and a wide-brimmed straw for working in the yard. I also wear a fair number of caps.

I go for a black Kangol cap as my daily headcover. Looks good, goes with anything.

I used to have a collection of fedoras but Dax pomade and then a flooded basement got the best of them.

My best had, I can't recall the brand now, was a nearly new vintage fedora picked up at a thrift shop for $10 that a "hat enthusiast" told me was easily worth a few hundred bucks. Now its a greasy mildewy mess. :-(

While I can't afford the best hats around, the folks at work always comment on my headgear. Right now I have 4 fedoras and a newsboy cap. the cap is black with white pinstripes. Three of the fedoras are new, one is old, grey and tweed. Picked it up for $0.99 at a thrift shop. The other three are black with white pinstripes, black, and a funky greyblack one.

My parents always made me wear hats as a baby, and I still feel strange without one. I wore a booney had all through college and one day my mom got sick of seeing me in it and threw it out. I wear a Tilley for camping/running errands but mostly wear Borsalino and Stetson fedoras in the winter, and I've got a Monticristi ultrafino for the summer. I've got a homburg as well for dressier occasions, though mine is a silverback color. And a couple of cowboy hats because this is Texas...

I've never been a hat guy. I will wear my Coolibar hat when it's hot and sunny out or whatever hat I need in the winter.

I do love old movies and one of the things that is striking to me is that, up until the early 1960's, men wore suits and hats most of the time, unless they had a profession where it didn't make sense. I think that was so cool.

I believe JFK was the end of the hat era.

But I do remember my father always wore a fedora when he went to work, even into the 1960's and 1970's.

Yeah, I actually thought of that, too. One reason I'm assiduously resisting the urge to get a zoot suit. And I swear, you will never catch me dripping gold chains, or wearing rings on every finger. A man's got to have some self respect.

    Plenty of self respect here.

I look silly in anything but a ball cap but I am a big fan of the newsboy and pork pie (the one Popeye Doyle has in The French Connection).

I never really did care what people think of me and may just get one.

JITG, that is one helluva cool hat.

I like hats, I just don't know how to wear them I think.

Now days, not many of us do I guess.

But, I wish I could and almost purchased a real straw fedora the other day. Still might.

Would you wear the red homburg with a suit and tie only?
