Is a slant an automatic "GEM" Slide aka Gillette Slide?
    Gurus?

How does a slant compare to an old type gillette?

I am no guru but I would offer that the Slant is similar to the Slide technique but not the same. A Slant offers the varied bar opening with an angled blade. The Slide is a straight-edge being moved across the skin at an angle. Both are great at mowing down whiskers.

I may be wrong, just ask the wife....

The Gillette Slide technique creates a slicing motion across the whiskers instead of a direct "chop," which results in a closer cut because the whisker is less likely to bend before being cut. A slant razor does not mimic that movement, instead the blade is angled off the perpendicular of the shaving stroke. It's more of a guillotine cut.

You haven't found your slant yet?

With the current Merkur slants, it is not quite the same as the slide. There are two added benefits besides the blade slant itself: the top cap twists the blade a bit along the edge and there is a gradient gap along the safety bar; it is indeed a well engineered tool for shaving.

There are some vintage razors that do only tilt the head, providing just an easier method for the slide if you shave in the direction of the handle. Plus, from pictures, it seems some older Merkurs did not have the gradient gap it does now.

There is a whole variety of them out there it seems.

I actually have one of rodds open comb slant to be replated. This thing shaves wicked the closest shave I have had yet. I was just wondering if this would be the same as a gem, gillette slide.

Im going to get one thats for sure.
