I've been carrying one of these for about 10 years ... it has pockets galore, and holds an incredible amount of stuff of any size, shape or weight. Sling it across your shoulder and it automatically adjusts the weight to make even large loads easy to carry.

I have the Black Nylon version, about $60 a decade ago. Today, I'd go for one of the leather models. Expensive, but worth every penny.

I've always liked the Bally messenger bags but they are quite pricey. Here are a few examples:

There is another brand called Dionigi which is hand-made in Italy and more reasonably priced. The leather and craftsmanship is amazing. I got mine from www.marcopoloni.com Here are a few that they offer:

How about this as an alternative:

    It beats carrying a purse.

I carried one like this through Europe this summer, it made a great day bag. Mine was from L.L.Bean so I don't know if the sizes are different, but it fit 2 bottles of wine and a baguette perfectly!

I am going to be buying a Domke F-802 Reporter's satchel as a combination daily carry briefcase and camera bag.

For use daily to/from work, it will carry thermos, lunch, iPod, phone, papers, etc. If I start carrying a laptop (my job currently doesn't require that), then I might have to sacrifice the thermos or go to a smaller thermos; the F-802 does accommodate a laptop. On weekends it can be easily rearranged to accommodate a variety of camera kits; Domke has a system of inserts that allows for fast and easy customization.

I already have two other Domke models for different photographic purposes. I look at other bags, but keep coming back to Domke (I only buy the canvas models) because I believe their utility, materials and construction are just about perfect for me. I find the shoulder straps to be great, as the rubber(ish) material used to prevent slipping works better than many others I have tried. And the bags just last and last. There are other colours as well, but I like the sand. I've never understood black camera bags as they are a heat sink during warm/hot seasons.

Edit: The F-803 is another option in this series. Despite the "higher" model number, it is actually smaller and may be a better option for the OP's requirements.

I think a general rule of thumb is to go with an outdoorsman/camping/military bag. I picked up a "Haversack, black" from my local Army Surplus store that was £5 and as robust as anything. Totally non-descript and will last for years. Its basically the same as the one they used in the Bourne Films, tho I didnt get it for that reason

I second the Chrome bags. I can't afford them, so I have to go with "Le Walmart".

I think how you carry it, goes a long way in how it is perceived. Looks better then the fanny pack fad we went through in the 80's.

I actually have a couple different bags that I carry on a regular basis, depending on what I "need".

For work I carry a County Comm XL Bail Out Bag. I have my laptop, some "get home" supplies if, for whatever reason I have to walk home, and a couple other goodies. Even has a hidden pocket for my carry piece!

For everyday stuff, or when I don't need my laptop, I carry a Maxpedition Colossus. Again, nice bag, I've got everyday needs in it (first aid kit, meds, water bottle, batteries, etc) and again, it has a special pocket for a gun if, for whatever reason I can't keep it on my waist.

And here, for everyone's perusal, is a post that I made on another board:

If you're shopping for a Maxpedition bag, or anything similar, check and see if eBags.com carries it. Then, go to Google Shopping and see if you can find the same bag for less money. Then note that eBags offers a 110% price match guarantee.

For example, eBags wants $124.99 for a Maxpedition Last Resort bag in khaki. A quick Google pointed me to Zazuh.com, which had the same bag for $77.79. 110% of the price difference is $51.92.

So, here's what you do. Place your order with eBags, then go directly to the customer service chat on their website. Tell them that you've found a better price, and you'd like to take advantage of their price match guarantee. You'll need to give them your order number, and the URL of the better price. The rep will verify that it's the same bag (and, yes, it has to be the same color!), and then apply a credit to your credit card. Thus, you get your Last Resort bag for $73.07 (eBags usually has free shipping). You'll also get a coupon for $10 off your next order e-mailed to you.

Note that you might want to use a "throw away" e-mail address when ordering from eBags, as they're constantly running specials and wanna let you know about them!

Thumbs up +1 for Tom Bihn!

I'll throw another vote behind Tom Bihn!

I've had a Tom Bihn ID Messenger Bag for 5 years now (for school) and the thing looks brand new despite near daily usage. Tom Bihn bags are band built in the US, just outside of Seattle and they're definitely built to last. I've put mine through everything and it has survived surprisingly well.

Also, if you have a laptop it has a great optional sleeve system called a Brain Cell. It has kept my MacBook happy and bump free.

You don't really need a bag to carry all of that stuff, just put it all in your car.
