I received my new Merkur HD 34G today, upon reviewing the finish I think it's not gold, but actually Titanium Nitrate finish. The same type of finish they put on cutting tools. I used to work in the cutter industry and have toured a half dozen coating facilities and saw many decorative items there for coating.
Even though it's not real gold, the coating will most likely stay on longer, since besides just electrically transfering the coating onto the surface like plating does. The TiN coating is done under vacuum, high voltage and works with plasma.
That made me wonder if any of the razor manufactures ever offered a TiN (Titanium Nitrate) coated blade?
