Open Comb Slants

Rodd,

thank you for posting your experience with these. Now I know I have to find me one, too. The Fasan comes up on german ebay quite often, but I think I have to try one of these metall Merkur open comb slants!

Rodd,

its been a while since the last post here but in the first post you say that this razor

came with a used Gillette U1 blade.

Could you please specify if this blade looks like the one from 1949 or like the one from 1974? You can compare them here:

I'm just asking, because I found an old Merkur that has the same handle like yours (not the same head) and came in the same box. Maybe this could help to date your and my razor.

I probably don't have the blade anymore to post a picture, but it was 40s style with diamond and arrow logo. Hope this helps Congratulations on your score!
I will see if I can find the blade, I know it isn't in the razor, because I use that thing a lot. :)

Thank you for the info, this really helps. So this is probably not from the seventies than rather from the 30ies or 40ies,

As you are the owner of these pics may I ask if I could post them in a german wetshaver forum to see if they know something about these open comb slants?

That would be my guess.

I am the owner. Feel free to share them, I just ask to be sited, and that you let me know what you find out! :) The one on the first post is just labeled Germany, not Merkur, but this one is labeled Merkur, and has the same handle style. That razor is no longer mine, but the pictures are.

Shaved with the one in the OP with a Feather today. :) Nice.

I posted the pics a few days before and got no response yet. I assume, the members in the german forum even don't know anything about these open comb slants. Too sad.

I didn't even know that Merkur made open comb slants before I saw the pics here, but now I had luck and can call one my own:

The handle of this razor looks like the handle of the Chessman-Slant. But the Chessman-Slant has the long screwing, this one has the short screwing, so the entire handle comes off when changing the blade.

I haven't tried it yet but can't wait to.

Awesome! I had one just like it, although not in as good of condition. Fantastic find! Get a blade in that thing! You will love it!

Very nice !!, A grand shaver, if you ever decide to part with it please shoot me a message :thumbup1:

It's been a while here but I like to come back here because I found another Merkur open-comb slant that belongs into that treat:

The razor is NOS and the head is stronger slanted than the head of the Merkur open comb slant razor I posted earlier here. I thing the razor has the same angle like the Hoffritz super slant.

The base plate is identical compared to the Abercrombie & Fitch slant Rodd postet at the beginning of that treat. Only the top cap and the handle are different.

That indicates that the Abercrombie & Fitch slant razors were made by Merkur back then IMHO.

The razor has some kind of plastic handle. So I think that the razor was made in the early post war time or war time when materials were rare back then.
