restoring strop

I've put some nicks in my strop and need to know what to use to get them out.

It is a cowhide strop. None of the nicks are too bad, but I fear bad enought to mess with my razor. I have been using magazines and newspapers, and they seem to work ok, but need to get back on the strop.

can I sand them out? steel wool? if steel wool would work I think I have some very fine stuff around here--0000 I think. If sandpaper, what grit would work best?

I have used fine sand paper,wet/dry, use dry, 400-600 grit should do. If there is a hanging piece of leather cut it off before sanding. Some others have recommended pumice stones, but I don't have one. The solution in part may depend on where the cuts are, edges, middle etc.

I've used DMTs in 325, 600, and even 1200 on strops. No worries about embedded grit.
