    Default Re-plating in the UK

    Evening all,

    I'm currently bidding on these:

But one of them needs re-plating badly - any idea how much this would cost me, and where I'd get it done? Obviously if I win it!

Why would one of them need replating? You would be surprised at how nicely most of the look with a little bit of polish and elbow grease.

It really doesn't look like either one of them needs replating.

If your looking for a plating shop, look in the phone book under plating.
Most shops have a minimum batch size and/or price.

hmmm - maybe I'll have to just wait and see if I win!

Any ideas how much would be reasonable to go up to? The right is a tech, is the left a new?

From what can be seen of the razor on the left, I don't believe it is a Gillette at all. I can't really tell for sure, but the handle, especially, doesn't look familiar.

    Regards,
    Tom

I've just got a gold "fatboy" (I guess that makes it an Aristocrat?) back from being restored by Dave at www.safetyrazors.co.uk - when I sent it off it was tired looking - heavy plate loss (about 30-40% by area) from the doors, dings in the plating on the handle with verdigris staining etc. Given what the razor cost me originally (£1) it was "worth a go".

Like a divvy, I didn't take a "before" to compare

Dave advised that he could touch up the plating in the problem areas - I bowed to his superior knowledge and waited...

This morning it arrived back - nicely tissue packaged in a little box - so immediately it feels like a good deal. Opened the box, removed the tissue wrapping and WOW! what a difference to the razor.

I was wary that the "touch up" might be obvious, but now it's arrived I've had the hand lens over it and I can't see the "join" - so now I have to get the number blacking sorted out (they were already unblacked when I got the razor originally).

My verdict - definitely worth a go. If I turn up another that could do with some TLC, I definitely will do it again.
My connection with www.safetyrazors.co.uk - nothing other than as a satisfied customer.

Glad you are happy with it Jason and thanks for the write-up

So long as the nickel beneath the gold plating is sound - it's straightforward to 'top up' the gold plating - if the nickel is damaged though, it's a full strip then nickel plate, then gold plate - a lot bigger job.
