What's new

Am I on my way to becoming a lush?

The sad thing with addictions they usually start off slowly, then one day good judgement goes out of the window and you can't stop. If any of your immediate family has had a problem with alcohol I would think twice about staying on the path you find yourself on. Just my 2 cents.

Look around you, bro. There are hundreds of guys here who post regularly about their favorite cocktails, wines, beers, and spirits. Do you think we're all just walking down the steep path to debilitating alcoholism? Definitely not.

So long as drinking doesn't disrupt your normal life, or the lives of those around you, I don't see a reason to feel bad about something you enjoy. Moderate drinking, according to some, is even good for you in certain ways.

And if you're still not convinced to continue enjoying the occasional tipple:

When I was in Grad schools almost 20 years ago, I had a job as a tour guide at a winery in the Napa Valley. There was a winery in the Sonoma valley called Gundlach Bundschu. They had a slogan if you can say Gundlach Bundschu Gewürztraminer you haven't had enough to drink.:biggrin:

"Drink your wine with a cheerful hear", but remember:

"Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,
And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. "

Therefore, drink, but never be intoxicated, for:

"Those who linger long over wine,
Those who go to taste mixed wine.
Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it goes down smoothly;
At the last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things
And your mind will utter perverse things.
And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
'They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it
When shall I awake?
I will seek another drink.'"

I prefer

“Let one drink and forget one’s poverty, and remember one’s own trouble no more.”

Proverbs 31:7

It's only a couple pages ahead of those other ones. :wink2:

That's a good trick - the same one that Satan tried on Jesus. Be warned: Text without context is pretext.

Let me redirect this a little bit. As I got further into the thread, it looked as though I had posted something like "I have to knock back a double bourbon every day when I get home" in my OP.

I don't like being buzzed or drunk, and it only happens now when I mix incorrectly or am feeling out a new recipe.

What has my eyebrows raised is the joy I get from mixing a great drink and simply enjoying the taste...immensely. It's like coffee. But potentially more dangerous.

I'm nowhere near having drinks screwing up work, home, et cetera...hell, I've only had one this week, two if you count ahead to this Saturday. I just wonder if it's possible to get hooked on cocktails for the taste and experience, not getting drunk.

Everyone is different, if alcoholism is in your genes like it is mine, be careful. I'm not an every day drinker, never have been but I tend to get in cycles where I drink more than I should to the point of blacking out, getting in fights,etc. . Last time I went off the deep end I drank two 1.5 liter bottles of wine, and about a 12 pack of beer, and some hard alcohol and ended up with my own personal jail cell, a hangover that lasted about 4 days, living with my brother for a week, and a lesson learned that me and alcohol don't mix. If you have to question if your drinking too much you just might be drinking too much.

To me "hooked" means addiction. You have a hobby and enjoy it. I enjoy smoking cigars and buying vintage razors. I don't think i have an addiction. I don't think you need help. Adddictions take over your life and affect others. Take drugs and porn for example. Bro, you are just doing something you enjoy.

My 2 cents from a 55 year old fart who's been around the block more than a few times. If you are questioning yourself whether you might have a problem it's time to stop and REALLY take a hard, long look at your actions and choices. You are the only one who can answer the question you ask and you can only do it when you are not being Cleopatra (queen of de nile).
