Default Help! Do you compulsively buy the same razor again and again?

This, I think, is a major symptom of RAD. When I see a razor that I like to shave with on da Bay. I can't help but put in lowish bid. Usually, I get blown by by the other bidders but occasionally I get a good deal (especially in the razor lots). But now look at the problem. My current inventory is 7 Fat Boys, 8 slims and 6 Red Tip Super Speeds.

Some how I gotta curb this!

Actually, that is a good suggestion for at least one of my razors. I have a re-assembled Fat Boy that I used for parts. I put it back together and it still shaves fine. But the twist to open knob moves away from the body when the doors open so you have to push and twist to access the blade. When it is closed, it is completely functional.

It may be a good PIF for a newbie who wants to test run a Fat Boy for shaving before buying. I will have to clean it up first, though.

Also, from you avatar and location, thanks for serving your country and all of us!

Sure man, but you do have eBay as well.

And besides, the British Gillettes are very nice razors indeed.

Tell you what- I'll trade you one of my Aristocrats for a British one. Or my Diplomat for a #66. Or a #16. Do you have a Coronation set? I'll take one of those too.

    Cheers mate.

Yeah but on our version of ebay we might turn up one or two. You seem to have dozens on the go! I wish I had something to trade but I only have the one safety razor...so far...

Just do a "worldwide" search my friend.

I'm bidding on some British beauties as we speak.

    Cheers.

Don't know why but adjustables, specifically Fatboys hold some strange fascination for me. I know that I have had at least 15 or 20 Fatboys that have been bought then sold over the past couple of years. I now am down to 2 that I will keep. The British Gillettes are also hard to walk away from.

I keep buying cased Aristocrats. Over, and over, and over, again. I think they are beautiful. I asked my theropist about it. He said I was nuts.

For now I'm trying to stay away from the British razors. One, is that I don't want to feed my addiction and two, I keep telling myself that in this time of recession, I am supporting home made products (yeah right).

Actually it is just an excuse to keep me from bidding on #66, #15 or whatever those European numbered razors are.

Please, no addiction enabling comments! It won't take much to push me over the edge!

    I keep buying bottom-dial I95's. I swear I've got at least 12 of them.

If I can't find them, I just buy one of Reynoldsart's "Bragger and Blade" or "Shave my Space" razors. They're close enough.

    Cheers.

Classic stuff. Who hasn't gone through this? They are beautiful little machines, filled with history, mechanical wizardry, and sometimes, aesthetic genius. I love the flare tip design of the super speeds, like Flash Gordon's rocket ship, and yes Snagle, the Diplomats are treasures to behold. Why does one feel compelled to have so many? Here is my theory. It is related to seeing a beautiful painting in a museum and wanting a postcard of it, you love the painting so much, you buy a dozen copies of the card. Your love for the item is intense, it sets off a chemical response in the brain associated with pleasure and longing. Buying it somehow temporarily satisfies the urge. Once you own it the cycle should end, but it doesn't. Because you fear you'll lose the desired object (misplace it, break it, give it to a friend) you want to have a replacement to allay your fears. Moreover, because their availability is limited, you urgently seek another. One replacement is rational. Multiple = RAD. Finally, each time you see the object of desire, the same pleasure chemical, probably Dopamine, starts flooding the brain and the learned response cycle starts all over again. But there is hope, as Thirdeye suggests, take 3 more Red Tips, and 3 more Slims before going to sleep, then call us in the morning. Sooner or later, you'll be cured and it will be time to winnow things down via B/S/T.

Great Hobby. Potentially dangerous but great. PS. Over the weekend, I saw a Jaguar E Type convertible in pristine condition. At least we don't have JAD.

What a well written post, Darjeeling. I tell my wife that she is lucky I am collecting things that are relatively inexpensive compared to foreign sports cars. Very well put!
