I'm a big fan of 40's vintage Gillette Super Speed razors. I was recently at the Quantico PX recently and they had blades for $1.39 a 10 pack. They also had cheap VDH brushes for around $3 and VDH soap as well.

So I guess I would start at your local military exchange and see what you can get for cheap.

first thing first

start using a brush and soap/cream while you still have some cartridges left, you'll notice a big difference and you'll learn how to make lather properly (mantics videos + B&B tutorials) give the canned goo to the other half.

i don't shave everyday, my face won't take it, but i would suggest something mild like an old Gillette Superspeed, it won't be your only razor after a while

i too have given in and just bought another 4

this place is great but it'll make you poorer than dirt

+1 on the brush and lathering.

I have not been able to get good shaves from a Gillette, but do from a Merkur Slant.
