Thread: Hone ID

    Question Hone ID

I did a bit of old fashioned horse trading a while back and part of the deal was the acquisition of the hone in the picture. All I know is that it’s a natural stone and was cut from a quarry in Southern England
It is very hard and there doesn’t seem to be any garnets or other inclusions to do the cutting, all I know is, as a finishing stone for the final polish I have not seen anything like it.
It`s a slow cutting stone but will handle the more tougher type stainless steels, I`m very impressed, it`s a stand out that’s for sure, therefore I would definitely appreciate any info as to the pedigree of this animal

Here's a list of hones quarried in Europe: http://books.google.nl/books?id=JggA...um=4&ct=result

As you can see the Devonshire oilstone does qualify as a hone quarried in Southern England.
