Ended up getting 3 pipes in a ebay lot of razors. All look like they have no use on the mouth piece, but when you look in the bowl you can see some residue. How do you properly clean a pipe??

My father (he prefers a pipe and I a cigar) uses a coarse pipe cleaner soaked in isopropyl alcohol followed by a fine pipe cleaner used dry. Just remember to let the alcohol dry before lighting.

He smokes from stone and meerschaum pipes. This technique, as far as I know, has not been tested on more absorbent wood and fired clay pipes.

When things get really nasty in the bowl, you can use the salt trick.
Fashion a stand out of crumpled aluminum foil. Remove the stem and place the bowl upright on the foil. Fiil the bowl to the brim with salt. With an eyedropper (or a very steady hand) add Everclear by drops until the salt is completely saturated. Let stand 24-48 hours undisturbed. Shake out the salt- it will be a filthy, grimey mess, having sucked out most of the gunk from the bowl. Clean thoroughly and reassemble.
