Default Is a Day of Rest Really a Good Thing?

Well at least in terms of shaving. First off, I rarely take a single day off from shaving, if I take a day off, I take a month and grow a beard , but over the last few months when I do take a day off, coming back on that second day is so much harder, I have loads more nicks and irritation. Now I also understand that if you really damage your face, you do need to let it heal or if you have a particularly bad patch you may want to avoid it so it can heal, but on the whole, my opinion is that shaving everyday and "maintaining" your beard and your face "used" to the razor, will yield better shaves, less irritation and fewer nicks. I read so often about recommendations to let your face rest, but for me, it just doesn't cut it.

I couldn't agree more...logic would have it that after a day of rest you would have a more agreeable beard, not so with me anyways. When I maintain it on a daily basis I have less touch ups so to speak than if I were to let it go. Sometimes I won't shave all weekend after shaving M-F, when Monday a.m. rolls around it takes me more passes and more touch ups. That's what works for me anyways.

Wow. Completely opposite experience for me! I get a better shave the longer I wait between them. I find shaving daily still doesn't work for me because my face doesn't get a chance to heal in just one day, and I'm just adding to the problem by shaving on top of that. Mind you, that's mostly because I'm still experimenting to figure out what works best for me. I tried a Derby for the first time this morning and found it MUCH better than the Merkur or Israeli. Looking forward to trying the Gillette and Feather...

I have tried the Derby, the Merkur and the Gillette thus far. Derby has been wining hands down and the Gillette was the worst shave by far!!

    Tim,

I've found that a day off, even when I was using my Mach 3 and gooinacan, always gives me a better shave. My theory is that it has something to do with the length of the wiskers. Maybe different hairs on your face grow at a different pace, and letting them all grow out a little lets the razor cut them all off super close, whereas normally it would miss some that were too short... I don't know. But it works for me. (Although I haven't been able to muster the will to take a day off since I got my first DE a month ago...)

I always get my favorite shave of the week on the day after I have skipped a day. And I'm am not nicking myself much, anymore, so I don't think it is a matter of healing from the carnage. However, I have a pretty light beard.

I've found it really makes a difference for me. My Monday morning shaves are always awesome, even with an old blade. Almost makes me wish my beard grew faster!

Tim I concur with you 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I might be the only with this problem but it is clearly something that must be considered for others as well.

Plus I love shaving now, hate to miss it, even a day!

    Marty,

I have tried it and for me it has always been an awful shave. But I'm glad for others they have something to make their shaves even better.

So does that mean your soaps are made to give close shaves yet increase beard growth???

My beard growth is pretty slow, and I like to shave off at least something, so I wait a day or 2 between shaving these days with my DE. I used to shave about once or twice a week with my Fusion, cuz back then, I hated shaving.

I dunno how old you are or if your work allows you to, but sometimes I leave a few days of stubble for that 'drug dealer' look.

    I have auburn hair.....lol

I am a complete sucker for men with long, long dark hair and full beards that are well maintained, but not shaved... kind of a biker stereotype, but a gentleman, learned, brilliant and eccentric.. well traveled, well read and curious.. Looks good in blue jeans and also in a tux, white tie or black, a cummerbund but never a bow. A man who can make me laugh.... and even snort unladylike every now and again.... but still sit and listen to Mozarts 25th in G and want to clean house, like that always does for me... or relax with Bach or classic rock..... or preferably no sound at all but nature.

I want to talk about quantum physics and gardening.. in the same conversation... Laugh hysterically, drink Dom and eat King crab, or go out for a box of sliders and fart all night.... together.

Something tells me I am going to be single for a LONG,. LONG time.... hehehe
