  1. Default Classic Shaving SOAP

WOW, I got some House brand soap in bay rum from Classic Shaving and does this stuff ever burn. I am a really big fan of bay rum but this stuff doesn't even smell good. I love the Dominica bay rum aftershave.

I tried this awhile back and then got in my Tabac, man is it ever great and I DO love the smell unlike some. Well I tried it again today and it didn't produce a lather anything like the Tabac and yes the burn and smell was the same.

I was just wondering if this is typical for a bay rum soap, as I would really like to try one that smelled like the Dominica stuff. and I do think I could live with the burn if it smell really good.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

My experience with their soap was similar.. Soap smelled like dirt. I didn't even try it out just threw it in the trash..

My second biggest disappointment since I took up classic wet shaving..

I had the same experience with the bay rum shaving soap from Classic Shaving. I sent them an email regarding the problems I had with the soap and they sent me another kind free. I have ordered several products from them in the past and the service has always been excellent. I would suggest contacting them.

This is pretty interesting. I've used their soap before with sterling results. I guess it's another case of YMMV.

I was thinking of contacting them but, I really thought that It was me!. I'm not sure but it might be just the bay rum soap that is really strong scented.

I did exactly the same thing. A Classic Sandalwood soap was in my first ever mail order of shaving supplies. The soap was in an outside garbage can shortly after I opened it. I would characterize the smell as like something that had gone bad. It was overpowering.

Everything else in the order was just fine and I have enjoyed doing business with Classic Shaving since then and expect to do so again. But I'll stay away from their soap!

Somebody's nuts. I don't know whether it's me or them, but somebody is definitely nuts. I just wished I knew, so I'd know, you know?

My only experience is with the Sandalwood scent. It was a freebie with my mug. At first I though it was an unscented variety, since it was quite weak, but the more I buried my nose in it and after I lathered it up, I would characterize it as kinda like dirt. Not "organic" or "earthy" or any other catch word, just dirt. Nothing to write home about.

I was also let down by the lack of lather. I tried it with a wet brush, drier brush, adding water, lathering longer, loading the brush better, wetting the puck pre-shave, etc. It all turned out light, airy, and too bubbly, with no body to it. The more I added water and whipped it, it just went from bubbly to runny. Needless to say it's under the sink now and outta play.

Not all bay rums will burn. If you really like the scent you will need to try a few brands out to see which work for you.

Here are a few vendors(I have tried the first three vendors soaps and experienced no burning but YMMV):

    Ogallala Bay Rum
    Saint Charles Shave
    The Gentlemans Quarter
    HoneyBee Soaps
    QED
    Suzie's Bubbles
    Mama Bears
