    Default Timor Razors

    Hi Guys,

I wanted to know what do you guys think about Timor's Straight Razors, they are not so expensive and i thought of getting one as a starter razor.

    http://gf-solingen.de/seiten/37rasiermesser.html

They have several kinds of razors.

Would you recommend getting one from them (probably the low-end = cheapest) or you think i should add more and get a Dovo one ?

Also i notice people with Dovo's are getting stains on them rather quickly, i'm afraid that would happen to me as well and don't want to go and buy oils and such so early with my razor.
Do you suggest Carbon steel or Stainless steel (i will get it shave ready if i can so it can hold the edge for a long time)

    That's it for now :)

This has come up before and as I recall there is a question as to the origin of the razors. If you read the info on the site they talk about manufacturing things in the past tense and all they say is they now supply products. Also I didn't see anything on the razor saying made in Germany. I suspect they are made elsewhere. maybe someone who owns one of the new ones and a Dovo can compare the two.

I don't know anything about Timors, but have wondered the same thing before I bought a Dovo. However, I'd feel perfectly comfortable buying one simply because they're German-made, as far as I know, so I'm sure the quality must be right up there with the Dovo's. In general, Germans build stuff right and with precision. I'm sure someone may know of an exception to this rule, but I haven't found one yet!

Everything I have heard about Timors is very good.

I picked up a Timor as my first newly-made razor (I had used an inherited Grant previously) and I'd say that it was perfectly adequate, but I wouldn't go any further. Freshly honed by Lynn Abrams (in Ohio, USA), it was truly shave-ready. Lynn also refurbished my old Grant.

However, I recently bought a Dovo Prima Klang, and the difference is just staggering! I don't know if this is true of all the Dovo-branded razors, but there's absolutely no comparison between the Timor Blue Steel and the Dovo Prima Klang.

(in my humble opinion...) but the Timor is a good shaver. Well worth the price!

Well that's the issue. Are they made in Germany? Just because its a German company doesn't mean squat. To my knowledge there is only one company in Germany making razors on a large scale basis and that's Dovo. Quite honestly I think you would do better with a vintage razor than a Timor.

I got at least 10 Dovo's I haven't had one bit of problem with staining at all, just treat them the same as you would any straight razor that being dry thoroughly immediately when finished using, I leave mine open for a while so if there is any water in the scales it dries out if I don't plan on using it soon I put a thin layer of oil on it and don't store them in a humid enviroment.

I have honed a number of Timor razors, they are adequate. They will shave. For the money you can do better. Dovo entry level razors are significantly better. Both the Wapienica and Double Arrow take a much better edge and they cost much less. The Timors have good eye appeal.

I have carried them in stock. They had a quality problem for a while when their grinder retired but I have been assured that they have trained a replacement. Christopher Giesen sent me samples from their new grinder and the quality seems to be greatly improved. They are comming out with more new styles this year.

On Giesen & Forsthoff homepage I e-mailed them and asked directly if the TTO razor was made by them in Germany or China as a house brand. Their reply was that the parts are made in China to their specs and assembled at the plant in Solingen, Germany. Closed by saying tis way they can give a 100% guarantee on the product.

Default Timor Razor P.S. to my post

They say there will be a new handle design of there own in 2011, maybe this will stop the Wieshi look-alike problem.
