Default Can you please ID my Gem and provide adviec?

I have been recently trying the open combs, to use as daily shavers. I grabbed a decent New (Red/Black), on eBay and the shaves are fpretty good. I need to adjust technique a bit, but no cuts so far, just some minor rash in small areas.

I found this GEM at a local antique shop and wondered what it actually was. I realize these are "straight" razor blades and it actually came with 2 packs of Treets in it.

Any information on the razor itslef and preferred blades would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what I'm looking for is a DFS every day, without irritation (aren't we all). I always read how open combs are more aggressive, but they have not been for me, although if you hold them incorrectly, I can see how they could be (and not always a bad thing either. I just don't prefer aggressive).

    thanks

This is the new I'm currently using:

Your Gem is a 1912 patent. If you would like to read more, there are a couple of other threads currently active on this forum about these same razors.

    Thumbs up

You can trust Dave, Tom, Guido and the others to tell you the truth about Gem, Ever-Ready, Treet, and Star single edge razors. They have been very helpful and patient answering my questions and providing outstanding advice.

This is the most interesting and helpful site I have visited and I have visited many. Thank you one and all.

Thanks Guido has been very good, but I try not to fill his inbox

I have seen some other threads, so I'm guessing these GEMs will cost $20 each next week It's so hard to ask a question wihtout generating a ton of interest and pushing prices up. I'm really just looking for a nice daily shaver, so I might give this a try after a week of the New.

    Josey --

I forget the model number of this GEM that you show, but this is one of those that were given a high polish and then triple chrome/nickel plated. The finish of these are superb and they just sparkle and are dazzling when cleaned up.

I have one of these and it was a skunk when I got it. A hot tap water/dish soap bath followed by Scrubbing Bubbles and a soft brushing brought it to a wonderful sparkling state. Great shaver, too.

If you can get it for a decent price, I'd recommend you pick it up. It should give you years decades of service.

That 1912 patent that you show will be a very good shaver. Many feel that it provides the best shave of anything available. Your particular speciman looks to be very nice.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the growing popularity of the 1912 here on B&B running the price up. They were made for thirty-some years and were very popular, so there is a goodly number out there.

    Tom
