Try skin stretching. Use the fingers of your left hand to stretch the part of the skin your about to shave. This way you can pull the skin away from the adams apple and other problematic areas. Also, try a second pass accross the grain (gently and NO pressure). Good luck.

You are not alone in having trouble with these areas. If it wasn't for the adams apple, it would be a lot easier for us to shave there :)!

Like Frederik, I, too, stretch the skin there and do a first pass with the grain, which for me is S-N there. Then a cross grain second pass, N-S here. And a third against the grain pass, diagonally from ear to adams apple.

Touch and cut is several strokes in different directions, always feeling the errant stubble with my wet fingers.

Use very, very light strokes; lighter than other areas of your beard. I also use Pacific Shave Oil (PSO) before each pass. PSO, www.pacificshaving.com, allows me to make multiple strokes over an area without irritation. Even a sensitive area like the throat.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

For some spots, I have to stretch the skin so much that I can't just tug from some far away area. I have to run my finger right in front of the blade, keeping the skin as taught as possible in that particular area.

In addition to pulling the skin I find that tilting the head helps a little. In my case this helps move the jaw out of the way and helps to flatten the area out a bit more. But this doesn't do the whole trick for me.

What I find most helpful, after the first pass, is to "spread the skin". I will use my index finger and my thumb for this. I put the index finger sideways on the upper part of the neck, above the area I want to shave, and push the skin up. I put the thumb on my neck (also sideways so that the you form a "C" with your index finger and thumb) below the portion I want to shave and push the skin down. I then use the razor in the area between the two fingers and go in the direction needed.

By spreading the skin like this I can pull the specific area taught that needs attention, and stretch the skin in a direction that keeps the stubble above the level of the skin rather than pulling the skin over it.

    Good luck.

That spot can be tricky sometimes. If two passes don't work (N-S then S-N), try stretching the skin slightly by tilting your head back and slightly to the side (opposite of the side of the adam's apple you want to shave).

When I do the neck I look upwards first. That provides quite a bit of stretching for younger skin that isn't sagging, which I'm guessing that you have. While looking up, do your with grain pass. And every pass that you do after that keep looking up and that should help. Also make sure to take your time and use short strokes with a clean blade.

Skin stretching is the only way I know how get a close shave on my neck. Also make sure you tap the razor every couple of strokes to remove the excess hair that gunks up between the blades. Yet another problem you'll avoid by switching to a DE!

Oil is just that - OIL. Pop a few drops on your hand and rub it on your face with water. We all know that oil and water do not mix, but they do a great job together on the face when shaving. I apply a little after the shower before lathering up -- it really helps the razor glide.

You can use it without lather, for example as an aid to a final touch up of tricky spots as you suggest too. It is great for this because you can see and feel the problematic areas. Keep adding water to the face to keep the lubrication.

There are quite a few suppliers of shaving oil on the high street these days -- L'Occitaine sell a very expensive tube, King of Shaves are stocked in the drug stores, and there are some other brands here in the UK (e.g. Somersets) so you shouldn't need to break the bank or shop online to try some.

Look for a used DE in the Shaving Mall. The price will be a little lower and razors are very easy to sanitize so you don't need to worry about germs and most DE's are so well made that they will last decades with ease.
