  1. Default Fatboy mechanical questions

As I stated in my introduction thread, I've got a 61 Fatboy that belonged to my father. It's in great physical shape except for two small issues:

    1) It seems to want to stick for a second when I open it

    2) Somehow the adjustment dial is off 1. It starts on 2 and goes to a nonexistent 10. It adjusts as it should and clicks nicely when it does.

What happened, and how do I fix those two minor things?

1). I have had success by sitting the razor upright (vertical) with the doors open and pouring a little CLR down the center of the handle. Let it sit in there for just a little bit and rinse with water. Repeat as necessary. There is a bunch of old gunk in there that is keeping it from operating smoothly. I wouldn't recommend using CLR to clean the entire razor (use scrubbing bubbles), but use it sparingly like described above to solve your problem. EDIT: I would not use this method if it has a gold finish, BTW.

2). I haven't had this problem before, but have read about it. You apparently push in the red spring once the dial has reached its stop point and then turn the dial further around. EDIT: If you are currently going from 2 to a non-existant 10, I would put it on 2, push in the red spring and rotate it one click over (so that the 1 is lining up).

I'm sure plenty others with hands-on experience will be chiming in shortly.

The first problem is usually caused by a slightly bent safety bar. If you look at both sides from the side while opening you should see where the base of one of the doors is contacting the guard at the point of the catch. This guard would need to be carefully bent outward to match the good one.

The second one I have not encountered before.

Calcium, Lime Rust remover. There are various products out there that do this, it's used to clean mineral and other buildup off of sinks, faucets and so on. It has become a general sort of product name for the company that produces it. They now produce all sorts of bathroom and other cleaners under the CLR name.

CLR may well sort out some of gunk buildup problems if there are any. Using the same method, but instead of CLR lighter fluid or paint thinner works well for me and without the danger of removing the plating.

Also, for a complete and in fact wonderful guide to fixing fatboys see here: http://vintagesaws.com/fatboy/fatboy.html
