    Default Alt-Innsbruck lotion & balm

Well, I just got my order of Alt-Innsbruck aftershave lotion and balm, and I can now say that I smell just like my Granddad used to!

Sure, the cooling effect is nifty, and it's not a bad scent, but it really does smell old-fashioned, like I just stepped into the fifties or something. Since I'm Austrian, and the stuff comes from Innsbruck, there would be more of an assiociation with old people there than if you wore this in another country.

I'm 25, and I knew it wouldn't be a hip and modern scent, but I HAD to try it. The lotion is even weirder because of the intense lemon note because of the citronella oil. They put a lot of that stuff in herbal teas over here, and this weed grows everywhere, so I'm quite sick of it.

I will banish Alt-Innsbruck to the back of the cabinet for now, and wear it as soon as my first grandkid is born. :)

This thread is now about your experiences and opinions of Alt-Innsbruck, and here are some pictures!

In reply to the OP - It is very interesting to note what a few thousand miles between two countries can do to a product. Here in the US Alt is not as commonly available nor is there a product even closely similar and hence it is very unique. I and most of us around here love the A/S and would never be without a bottle of it.

I got a bottle of Alt for Christmas and I can't get enough of the stuff.

Does the balm compliment the splash nicely?

As for the cultural stuff, it may just be my nose and associations. I'm not actually sure whether my grandad ever used this, it just smells "old" to me.
I used to think about the same thing about Musgo's Oak Moss edt, but I'm starting to like that, so you never know what's going to happen.
I'm just not sure if I'm brave enough to ever go out of the house wearing A-I.

The balm does complement the lotion rather nicely, but it starts off with lemons and more lemons, but it's slowly settling down now into the usual A-I aroma.
If I had to choose, I'd take the splash. Very easy on the face. The balm leaves me all sticky for a few hours.

Thanks for posting -- I had no idea there was a balm! AI is something I sought out when in Munich, and have enjoyed very much. Location is everything, though, as has been said. To me, this is a valued and rare commodity with the added bonus of a beautiful tobacco scent that reminds me of my own youth in Kentucky. Of course, it also helps that the AS is particularly effective!

Does anyone know where to get any other citronella scented lotions in the US? I happen to love that smell (reminds me of my dads horse ranch) and I dont know anywhere to get it.

I tried out a sample of the balm after my shave this morning, but ended up being a little freaked out at the high viscosity and heavy citronella fragrance. Not knowing what to expect, the stark difference between the Alt-Innsbruck balm and my usual Trumpers Skin Food was rather pronounced. I would liken it to rubbing lemony olive oil into ones face. Sadly, I had to resort to washing it off, using quite a bit of soap after the high oil content of the balm thumbed its nose at straight water. The upside is that now my face feels pretty well lubricated, though I will certainly exercise caution when next braving this balm.

It didn't help that the label of mine is entirely in German. I thought maybe I was using it wrong and it was some sort of shave equipment lubricant!

The balm feels great but smells identical to Murphy's oil soap, very overpowering.

The splash is all around fantastic though

That's too bad to hear about the balm. I was thinking about ordering both, but I think I'll stick to the splash. I know everyone has their own opinion, but just the thought of the Murphy's turns my stomach enough to not want to even risk the purchase. The MOS is one of the worst smells I've ever come across.

    Love the spalsh.

I found the emulsion to be a little thick and greasy.

I've picked up both the AS and the balm.

Yes, the balm is thick and a little oily, but I like it. I almost always shave at night, so I'll put on the Alt-Innsbruck balm as the last step of my routine. It moisturizes well and leaves me feeling good in the morning. Though I'd agree with the rest of you who wouldn't want to wear it around during the day. I haven't tried using it as a preshave yet.

By the way, West Coast Shaving carries the balm if anyone is having trouble finding it.

The AS is wonderful! Maybe it's a scent for the older folk in Austria, but there's nothing like it in the United States. It's a distinctive scent rarely found - I've only found a handful of sellers. Reactions to it have been good, as well!

I enjoy Alt-Innsbruck more every time I use it. I really enjoy Floral fragrances, and tobacco flowers have a very exotic but still familiar scent.

I spent some time studying in Austria too, and guess I wanted to use and enjoy something from what was once my adoptive homeland, so it has that going for it too.

FWIW my sample came from Bullgoose shaving, so I'd assume one could seek the A-I there, too
