What do you guys shave with given that tallow and glycerin have and do use animal product?

While tallow is animal based, glycerine isn't necessarily. Glycerine is produced from saponification of oils in the soap-making process. These oils can be either vegetable or animal in origin. My wife and I make all-natural soaps at home, using no animal products whatsoever (just all-natural vegetable oils), and I know that glycerine in a natural by-product of the saponification process of these oils. Presumably, all you would need to do is make sure that the soap had no tallow in it. If it doesn't have tallow, then the oils would almost assuredly have to be vegetable oils. The glycerine in the soap, then, would be vegetable in origin.

That's just my semi-educated opinion. Surely other more educated members of the board will correct me if I am wrong.

Bah! There are literally hundreds of shaving soaps/creams that are 100% animal free. Hell, it is getting harder to find a product that has tallow. Many soaps have been reformulated to eliminate the tallow (i.e., gone veggie).

AFAIK most all of the glycerin shaving soaps are veggie based.

Ummm, I'm not sure about the vegan part. These last two ingredients are not all-natural. I believe, although I could very well be wrong, that the parabens are chemical preservatives. That would take it out of the vegetarian/vegan/all-natural realm.

Is there a difference between vegan and all-natural? I thought they were basically the same...

They tend to go hand in hand, but vegan just means that it wasn't made from anything derived from an animal.

To clarify that -

vegan just refers to whether or not something is made from an animal or an animal byproduct. Leather, hamburger, pork rinds, etc. all-natural is usually defined as unrefined and not containing anything artificial.

Something can be all-natural and NOT vegan (mmm bacon) and something vegan can often be not all-natural (plastic, etc).

The term "natural" is not governed by the FDA. When it comes to product packaging, it's meaningless.

The drawback for a lot of these vegan, vegetarian and organinc, etc. shave products is that they often use a lot of plastic packaging.

Vegan does not equal "all natural".

Glass is, technically, vegan.

Beef is "all natural" but it's not vegan.

A lot of things that do not agree with us are natural like some poisons, tobacco, reactions and diseases. As a matter of fact fat is a natural product.

I believe that Dr Bronner's shave gel is vegan, although it's not marked as such. The only question would be the glycerin source, which I suspect is almost certainly non-animal

Some Bronner's products have beeswax and are thus non-vegan, but the shave gel doesn't contain it.

Personally, though, I hate the stuff! if anyone wants to try a tube of the lemongrass version, I'll send it to you for free in the US as a PIF. Just send me a PM.

I think most vegans default to a shave oil or castile soap. Perhaps an olive oil soap, but know that their performance of each of these will be limited compared to other products you may be accustomed to using.
