Default Another oldie razor- SE ASR

Well folks, here we go again. I let my mom know of my interest in old razors and she appears later holding this old gem (no pun intended).

From my checking the ASRCO website, Gem and Ever-Ready merged in 1906 to form "The American Safety Razor Co". Star was added to the company in 1919.

I've seen pictures of Gem's, etc, and they look similar. But I've never seen one with just the ASR logo. Perhaps someone with more historical knowledge could lend some more info.

As for the picture I took with the writing on it, it says on the top:

    American Safey Razor Co.

    Across the middle:

    Inventors & Makers

    On the left back:

    New York

    London

    Hamburg

    On the right back:

Rate In All The Principle Countries Of The World

Its a pretty neat piece. However I could not imagine shaving with it!

    Peace.

That's a 1907 ASR. It was designed to use the thin, rib-back blade like we still use today in SE razors.

Definitely get some good SE blades and try it out! I use this general type of razor regularly and get great, comfortable shaves every time. Just keep the razor almost flat against your face and take your time until you get the angle just right and generally get the hang of using an SE. Don't give up until you've had at least three or four shaves. It does take a little getting used to, but it is worth it to get those great SE shaves.

I would love to come across an '07 ASR! . . . what a great find! . . . I would thank my mom profusely if I were you. I'd like to know her sources!

    Regards,
    Tom

My brother says he found this in a dumpster when we were teenagers. He (and my mom) said it had a case, and my brother said it had the operating instructions. I'll see if she can find those. That would be really cool.

    Thanks Tom!

    Thanks Tom!
If you find the case and instruction, that would be really great. Even the razor itself is a wonderful find. I guess I need to start dumpster dipping.

The B&B forums are the best. I never cease to be amazed at the knowledge (and courtesy) of the users here.

I'll let you guys know if anything happens with the case and instructions.

After much deliberation it appears that she (my mom) was the one that found this razor. She says she found it in an old shack behind our house many years ago. This house has since passed into family memory, and I was just a crawling little tyke at the time. A sister was added right after me, and one more would arrive at what would become our home, two houses later. I was later distressed to find that our brood of eight was not the pinnacle of Christian propagation.

So somewhere lies a razor that my brother found in a dumpster. Supposedly in a box with instructions.

    The plot thickens...
