    Default shaving bowl

    hi,

i am after a shaving bowl - as i don't have one at present. could anybody recommend me one, or what to look out for in a suitable bowl?

i usually use a shaving cream, and lather it straight onto my face with a brush but it doesn't appear to produce an optimal lather.

    many thanks

Well, you could search around some of the high-end shaving shops online and pay hundreds of dollars for a shaving bowl.

Or, you could go to Ikea or any other discount store, find a good, easy to hold bowl made of metal, ceramic, or whatever, pay under $10 and be set for years. For me, it's a no brainer. I have a smaller yellow ceramic bowl that came 4 for $10, and it actually helps to keep the lather warm becuase ceramcis do that.

I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions here, but for me, inexpensive that works still beats luxurious that works, since I don't have the salary to enjoy luxury anyway.

    Peace,

    Pierre

I hope you realize what you have just done-more than likely, you will get a minimum of 50 replies. Basically, three types:

    1.Bowls
    2. Mugs
    3. Scuttles

You will be able to find bowls and mugs at stores in your area. Look for one(or two) that fit well in your hand, are solid, good to look at, or easily stored away.

Scuttles can be seen online and purchased online. Check the reviews to see if this interests you( as if warm lather for the entire shave doesn't interest all wetshavers! )

    Hope this helps!

I started a thread here on B&B about a shaving bowl idea that works for me.

I have 2. Ones a stoneware "dip bowl" I got a target for $3. The other is a burts bees shaving mug my mom gave me some years ago. I say just find something easy to hold. Might even be something suitable sitting in your kitchen cabinet!

Somebody around here had pix of a Target rice bowl that even had a finger hole in it. Very nice looking for little money.

I found out the hard way that your bowl should have sides that are relatively straight up and down or else the lather sloshes out of the bowl when you whip it up with your brush.

Ah, you live and learn in the world of wet shaving.

I am very happy with a very large, heavy, black coffee mug that was given to me as an Oracle (database software) promotion. Before that, I had been using an old Campbell's Soup mug, which even though larger than most mugs, is still not so big as the Oracle mug.

Also, the soup mug is white. The black coffee mug makes it much easier to gauge my progress when whipping up a lather.

I need to post a picture, but I am lazy.

If you are looking for affordablilty and selection, I would have to recomend Target.

Just go to the kitchenware section and you will find a number of suitable bowls/mugs in a variety of colors and finishes. I picked up a nice, plain white bowl for $3.99 that has been serving me well.

I got mine from Wal-Mart... It's a rice bowl, but it's a VERY thick and heavy one... Holds the heat seemingly forever...

One nice thing about the advent of Starbuck's (and their $4.00 cup of coffee) is the huge coffee cups that they and other retailers now sell. These larger coffee mugs allow for more room to swill the brush. I'm probably related to "ratcheer" in that mine is also a "freebee" from a medical company.

Like a few others, I went to the clearance aisle at Target and got a handsome, thick stoneware bowl with highish sides for 2-3 bucks. It holds heat for an hour and lathers like a champ.

Also, I've been curious about the Moss Scuttle for a while now and my wife let it slip that one is on the way for our anniversary. We'll see which vessel wins the competition.

I think it looks the biz Wildman and the price looks good too. I ordered this shaving mug http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...952/203777.htm and it came with a nice bay rum mug soap. However, since joining B&B, I am on the look out for a shaving bowl too as I will want to experiment with various creams/soaps in the future. I think Leisureguy (Michael) said on another thread that he keeps a lookout in the "thrift" shops. I think over here, I will pop into the charity shops occasionally to look for a bowl that will just click with me. I believe a bowl with straight sides helps stop slopping etc but it seems another thing to experiment with. Good luck with the search!

Well I certainly did. Can't make up my mind though whether to use the grapefruit, the pineapple, the paint roller or the crockpot

I'm using a ceramic cereal bowl at home. I just picked up a small ceramic bowl today that will fit in my shave kit for the road. $1.99 at Publix.

How can you tell if a bowl or mug is ceramic?

I have one of those big latte mugs that's really a bowl with a handle. I'm wondering if I there's something else that would hold heat better...

    Thanks,
    Josh

Ceramic tends to be a bit thicker than other materials. Basically, if it isn't plastic, metal, or glass, and it's kind of heavy, it's probably ceramic.

I'm still using the $4.95 'african self watering pot' from walmart as a scuttle and happy.

At $5, its worth finding out if it's for you. I hear home depot (or was it lowes (or both)) has additional variety.

    my two cents
