Default Suggestions For My Next Razor?

Ok, I am still mastering the Futur but I really like it. My old Merkur open comb is easy.

But I've been thinking about ordering another razor to try. I've been looking at the HD, and Feather DE, and a few others. I can't decide what my next razor purchase should be.

    Help? Recommendations? Pros/cons?

I would go for a vintage Gillette Slim Adjustable.. It is my to-go razor and I really like it.. Since you have a modern adjustable (Futur) then I say - try the old stuff.. You will not regret it..

    Merkur slantbar, or a straight.

Edit: Seriously, I went from a Merkur Futur to a Slant and it's lovely. Then I went to straights which is what I've been using for the last 5 days. :)

The Feather DE razor is really not all that good. Skip it. (I have it...)

Slant is a good choice, I think. Different from what you have...

Another possibility: a Schick Injector. I just shaved with one---very nice.

    Or the GEM G-bar.

Or the Gillette adjustable, as was suggested.

So many choices, so little time.

The Fat Boy or the Injector.

I've been using the Fat Boy a lot. I showed it to a friend of mine and he liked the weight of it right away.

I'm going to jump into the injector game one of these days. I just need to find the right one.

Now I'm wishing I hadn't told you to get an injector because I'll be competing with you for the same razor.

    All's fair, eh?

Mason, I started with the Futur and I've just had my first shave this morning with at Gillette Superspeed and I have to say that after one shave, I would heartily recommend this as your second razor.

A Tech or a 1940s Super Speed (both very mild razors). Using razors like these was somewhat of a wakeup call as to how minimal of blade exposure you need to get exceptional shaves.

Don't go for the feather. The one I saw in my Asian grocery store looked like a cheap piece of plastic. Darn, why don't they just sell the blades...?

I agree with the 40s SS recommendation. They are truly remarkable razors, and you can still get them for under $20 if you're patient enough. I just got a Tech delivered to my door, but I still have to clean it before I use it, but it sure has a nice feel to it, just another possiblity

Or, if you have the money and the patience combined, look for Wilkinson Sword "Sticky" - no first hand experience but people are crawling over each other to get them. Must be something to them.

    Peace,

    Pierre

Wow, some interesting replies. Much to think about and no closer to a decision

Seriously, thanks for the heads up on the Feather. It's often hard to tell anything from a photo, hence my question.

For the moment I am basically looking at new versus vintage as I seriously have no time to watch eBay autions while out on the road. I will be watching the sales ads here on the forum though. An outright purchase without the hassles of an aution is not out of the realm of possibility.

The slant is an interesting suggestion and I may look more into that one.

As I have a very nice adjustable in the Futur I am really looking at some nonadjustables to add to my puny collection.

I always liked the classic Gillette with the, I'm not sure what they're called, missle silo type head that swings open. Perhaps I may look into something along those lines.

I will be doing searches on each and every suggestion offered and extend my thanks to all who have or will offer them.

I had a thought today that my old 6 pipe case just might make a dandy razor case so now I'm going to dig it out and see how that may work out. Right now I'm carrying both my razors in a small leather case and they are basically just rolling around loose inside it. They can't move much but I don't like the idea of them banging against each other.

Did I read you right--you don't have an HD.

Gotta have one. Honestly, my only DE and I have no desire, impulse or otherwise to own any other. There is so much gushing about the HD on this board that it's seems like an essential thing.

Thank you. I'm seriously leaning toward an HD based upon everything I've read here on B&B.
