I carry with me, at all times, a Leatherman Wave, a 200 Lumen LED flashlight, and a swedish firesteel.
these things i have carried and always will carry, just in case.
This would be a good time to recommend something sturdy as I am in the market for a good quality knife. I need something that retains a good grip even with mitts or gloves on and is easily accessible wearing winter weather gear. Size does not matter as long as it is efficient. Also looking for a good flash light and windproof matches but the knife is more important. Thanks guys!

I'm a simple man to please, I simply require the best.
Yes, and I understand that next year it will be ball-point pens.

... And yet, you are more likely to be stabbed in Scotland than any other first world nation. Good deal, eh?
I carry a Spyderco Para-Military. I used to have an Endura but it was a bit too large (and I accidentally pitched it in a mall trash can with a pair of old jeans.)
I generally recommend Spyderco to anyone looking for a pocket knife, because you can't go wrong with their products. Even their budget Byrd line is well made. They have nice stuff for the discerning purchaser of sharp things also, the para has a great lock and S30V blade steel (which is awesome.)
In the US, you can probably pick up an S30V Native at Wal-Mart quite cheaply, and this is one of the better deals to be had on the market today.
Unless you have a legitimate reason to carry one....which I don't. So, in my lunchbox I have an Opinel No7 carbon steel blade, cheap, sharp and simple design.
In my mountaineering days it was a locking swiss army knife and my old army belt/boot knife which was secured in the sheath with a thumb-flickable press stud - I used to have it hanging hilt down inside the tent after seeing someone else trapped in a burning and molten tent. Had a razor sharp and pointy double edge. Some bastard burgled it along with my dads medals.
As a member of the British Kendo Association there's loads of us with swords that travel around the country training but still need to be a member of such an organisation with insurance/licence, and have them wrapped in a cloth bag inside a lockable case (so they are not readily usable when taken out) and with insurance documents, preferably locked in the boot(trunk) of the car. If stopped by the police we have the right to refuse to show them on the spot as to do so would be committing an offence under the Offensive Weopons Act, they should know that but it still happens about once a year somewhere.

Boker Walter Brend BTF I, or my Cold Steel Gunsite Voyager Tanto, half serrated blade. Love them both, and many days I'm torn and it depends on what I'm going to do for the day. For work, I'll grab the Cold Steel...in dress clothes the Boker.

Kershaw Onion. . . in black.

In my limited experience I have found Kershaws, every model of theirs I've seen, to be outstanding. I'm sure someone else will be able to chime with with a particular model to fit your bill.
Edit: Also out of the box, if you do choose a Kershaw, it will literally be sharp enough to shave with.![]()

Normally carry something UK legal, like a sub 3inch slip-joint. For instance Queen canoe in D2 or a Case of some description.
And if i have a good legal reson for a knife, Sebenza or Benchmade 707.![]()
Edd
I carry a Smith and Wesson locking folder 3" blade, the rubber grips on the sides fell off it as well as the name badge of S&W and all the paint has worn off it and the grip is just about totally stainless now, but it was only about $13 and is made in chinabut I use it all the time to cut and or open one thing or another, it is about 4 years old and I can't kill it no matter how much I abuse it.
I have a couple nice knives including Benchmade, SOG, Kerhaw etc but after losing a Spyderco I think delica model that apparantly slipped off my pocketI only carry the more expensive and heavy duty knives when necessary
