Question How to load a SEGAL?

The e-bay seller tells me he (she) does not know how to load a razor blade, and that in fact the head does not screw open / off.

    Anyone know?

    TIA

    Like so:

As a note: they do not take normal DE blades.

Yes, when you turn the knob, the head cap raises up and then slips to one side with one end up. You can then install the SPECIAL Segal blade which has a large slot in it which will clear the cap. When the blade is in place, you turn the knob the other way and the cap turns and comes back down in place.

It's kind of novel, but you have to use the Segal blades. I wish I had a good picture of one with the head cap raised so you could see what I'm trying to describe. I've got some of the razors and a couple of the blades but, unfortunately, I don't have a working digital camera right now.

Good, I see Joel got in first and he has pictures.

    Regards,
    Tom

    Exclamation now I remember

Thanks for reminding me about this variant on loading a blade and especially that this razor will not take standard DE blades.

    Most appreciated!

I remember reading somewhere the Segal was very innovative for it's time (actually pre-dating the Gillette TTO's), but it's mechanism had a tendency to get "out of time" as it aged.

Just a quick note. ANy modern blade can be easily modified to work in a Segal, they are great shavers.

I would like to know more about that technique as I would love to drop one into my rotation.

You just have to cut the center out of a regular DE to accommodate that oval. It only has to be large enough. It doesn't have to be precise, since those little points at each end will hold the blade in position.

I have one and it does give excellent shaves!!

modifying a blade to fit isn't too much trouble, just be careful.

It's worth the time to use the razor once in a while. If you really like it, you could probably sit down and mod a half dozen blades at one sitting and have them ready.

I really enjoy using my Segal, and am going to get it ready for a run this weekend after seeing this thread.

I bought one because I really wanted one for myself and may have to work on modding some blades and trying it out!
