    Default Finally conquered the neck!!!

Well, the sides of the neck, which were giving me trouble in the BBS department. I realized that my beard growth is symmetrical around my jawline, and since I was going toward the ear at all points, I should go across from the bottom of the neck for the second pass, as I was going across from the sideburns above the jawline.

What a difference! All but right under my chin is as smooth as my cheeks now. Just thought I'd share to give fellow n00bs some hope. I can now do 3 passes no problem. Remember, if you're not getting smooth, look to the first and second passes and think about direction.

I'm with you; with me, the feel of the blade going across the neck is more important than anything. For me, that's a south to north pass, and a couple of more passes at a 45 degree angle from ears to adams apple, gently as can be, painting with lather the whole time.

Bottom line, if it feels comfortable, go with that, and the blade will do the work.

I've been wet shaving for quite a while now and I've never been able to get BBS on my neck. I know exactly which direction the beard grows in but any pass even with no pressure irritates my neck. I've tried with the grain in at least two passes and then across the grain and thats when the real irritation comes and I don't even attempt against the grain. Even if I do a third or fourth with the grain pass it irritates. Everywhere else is fine it's just on my neck. Oh yeah and I've experimented on several different creams, soaps, and blades and it's always the same. They say that sensitive skin is just a myth but I swear I've got it.

    Fantastic feeling isn't it?

No other shave is quite as satisfying as your first truly BBS shave.

    Thanks guys...

Nizzyrate, I found that I thought I was going WTG but I was really going across. I had to feel the grain rather than see it. Mine looks like it goes down and away, but it actually goes up and away. Very deceptive, but changing direction was the beginning of the beginning. Perhaps something similar is your case?

I'm sure sensitive skin is a real issue, but I'm also sure you will cause problems going the wrong direction, no matter your skin type.

    Nizzyrate,

I know that you said you know your grain direction, but there is a simple way to confirm the grain that works for me. Try taking a cotton ball and pull it across your neck from different directions. Watch to see which direction catches or tears off the cotton fibers the most. That direction should be against the grain.

I have also found that all XTG are not equal. For example, if a N-S pass is WTG, then S-N is ATG. Both E-W and W-E should be XTG. However, you might have more problems with one of the XTG then the other.

I've always believed that the best way to find out which way your facial hair grows, is to let it grow out for several days, and take pictures, so that you can remind yourself of the direction(s) the whiskers are growing in.

That's part of the secret to getting your neck/chin BBS; knowing the direction of whisker growth.

I have only recently been able to get a smooth neck after shaving. My technique isn't subtle, I just make another pass and blade buff like crazy on the two areas that are most difficult, each side of centre. I have tried shaving those areas in every direction and blade buffing is the only remedy for me.

MINE TOO!! Drives me crazy. I have learned how to do the buffing too (in the buff I might add).

I am thinking it may be the razor after reading a few of the reviews on the Fatboy. What are you using?

    Good Job!

Mine was rather tricky as well. I have 3 or 4 directions to truly run WTG on my neck.
