Which Trumper

I am thinking of a kickaround, Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon scent, and since I have an order coming, thinking of Trumpers. My preferences are for something that is not close to the skin, but projects, and lasts longer than usual. I dont like heavy on the vanilla, or powder, or vetiver.

Here are ones that I am considering:

GFT
Marlborough
Fern
Sandalwood
Maybe Astor, I dont know

Can someone comment on any of these?

Sam, GFT is a citrus lemon scent. Long lasting for a citrus scent. Wild Fern is similar to Penhaligons English Fern. I did not like Sandalwood but their are other gents that enjoy it.

Andrew: I wonder what kind of smell the Fern is, as I have not smelt it. Can you sorta describe it? I know Gordon has spoken of Fern as one a man must have, and I think he meant the Penhaligions, but Trumper may be a substitute

Austin is the first person I've heard of that didn't like the Trumper sandalwood. The sandalwood is AMAZING long lasting and wonderfull.

Other then that I'd get the Marlborough. I really like that scent as well.

The sandalwood can be offensive - it projects louder than Corey Greenburg's stereo system. I am not a huge fan of Trumper's cologne offerings; IMO you are better off looking elsewhere.

The fern is an intensely minty/herbal concoction. Hard to explain.

I have tried all of the scents you list. I prefer the Penhaligons version of the Fern, but beside that the Marlborough is my favorite listed there. It has been a bit since I wore it, but I tested and retested and retested all the Trumper line and I kept coming back to Marlborough.

I love the Trumper Sandalwood, but I agree it can be a bit overpowering if you put too much on.

Ok, it is now down to Sandalwood, Fern and Marlborough

Here are things I have gathered

Sandalwood: Very masculine and the longest lasting of the three. I am worried about how it smells. Someone said it is similar to Chanel Egoiste. The price for 1.7 ounces would be about $45, so that is not bad.

Marlborough: Good fall and winter scent, maybe the 2nd longest lasting and also a stronger scent. May be soapy like Spanish leather can be, which might be bad,

Fern: Given how expensive Penhaglions are now, the Fern was said by Gordon to be like Penhaglions version. $48 for 3 ounces is palatable.

So, still desiring comments on these three. Thanks men

Request a sample kit of colognes from Trumper (for free) - then decide which one YOU like most.

Personally - I am not wild about Trumper Sandalwood cologne, it just doesn't do much for me. The GFT however is one of my favorites... it has a REALLY incredible "old world" sort of smell, but with a slight "modern" flare. I will say this though.... GFT strikes me as more of a "light formal" scent than a "kick around."

Personally, when I think "kick around" weekend scent - only ONE firm comes to mind.... T&H. Trafalgar, 1805, and Grafton are just about the finest "kick around" scents on earth, each having their own respective "place" on the mantle. Neither of the three are offensive, they all have outstanding depth and lasting power, yet will NEVER offend. To date - I have not heard of a SINGLE individual who has disliked, or found one of those 3 scents offensive in the slightest.

I know you asked for Trumper offerings... but that's my 2 scents.

Question for you however.... why not look at Trumper Skye? As far as I am concerned, there is no better "kick around" fragarance from the trumper line.

Hi Sam,
I have so many Trumper colognes and aftershaves that I feel like the old woman that lived in a shoe.. While I enjoy all of those that you list, with perhaps the exception of the sandalwood, I really enjoy wearing Astor. An absolute delight. It is just not like every other Trumper cologne.

Hi Sam. I will cast a vote for the Wild Fern. It is an absolute delight and is everything Polo would love to be. It truly reminds me of a walk through a clean smelling meadow in the early spring or a crisp fall day. You know I love the Trumper sandalwood. I consider it to be a bit beyond a "kick around" type scent. It's very potent and long lasting. The Fern is, in my estimation an ideal scent for a country or cosmopolitan gent to splash on and head for either the office or the mall. It's really versatile.

Ditto on the Fern. The sandalwood is way too strong IMO. Even makes me feel a bit sick. Astor is nice as well.

It's all a matter of taste really. The sandalwood is my personal favorite followed by the Marlborough. I've never gotten anything but compliments on the sandalwood in my immediate surroundings but like I said...it's all a matter of taste.

I've never sampled the Fern or the Astor but found the GFT to fade very quickly and wasn't impressed by that one.

I agree. I am not a huge fan of Trumper colognes myself and whilst I wore GFT and Fern a couple times from the samples I received, I cannot say that I would ever buy a full bottle of them. I love sandalwood but was not impressed with the Trumper Sandalwood. You may love it but you certainly might hate it....I don't think it is worth the risk.

I would go with Joel's recommendation if you can and get some T&H instead !

hello sam,

definitely go with the sandalwood. i didn't like gft, marlborough or astor. to me, the wild fern is way too cloyingly sweet. spanish leather is a nice choice for cool weather and lasts a while. west indian limes, on the other hand, lasts exactly 1 nanosecond. if you want a long lasting lime you have to go with taylor no 74 victorian lime. nothing else comes close.

You forgot the Violets Ron! Be sure to get some Trumper's Ajaccio Violets (aka Whore's Handbag) samples Sam. It's either a love it or hate it thing.

Trumper's Sandalwood is one of my favourites, but it is certainly not a Saturday afternoon "kick around" scent.

I think both Wild Fern and Marlborough are closer to fitting the description of "kick around" scents. I feel the Trumper's Fern is nearly identical to the Penhaligons offering. I really like the Marlborough and cannot imagine it being offensive. I have worn both on lazy Sunday afternoons and never encountered the scent police busting down my door.

Joel is right in recommending the T&H scents. Grafton has a great range in terms of being adaptable to a Saturday afternoon or a Friday night. I personally dislike 1805 though many like it a lot.

James. My take is the same as yours. Almost to a letter. The ony difference is I have not had the pleasure of testing Marlborough. For that matter, Curzon, Astor, Wellington, Silvester, or some others from their other ranges. It's been so long since I sampled the T&H colognes I fear I couldn't give a good recollection of the scents. I do remember that I liked the Spanish Leather but there was a dispute at the time whether it was the newer formulation or a sampler of the older greenish/yellow juice that made this such a stalwart of us Anglophiles. For the life of me I can't remember. Anyhow, I hope Sam finds a nice scent and again, I can't recommend Wild Fern enough.

Both the Trumper's and the Penhaligon's Wild Ferns have a very "classic" scent to them. Personally, they really don't jump out at me, but I do not dislike them either. I've had a few other people do the sniff test on them, and some really like it, or others like it minimally, but I haven't found anyone that actually dislikes it yet. Seems like a pretty safe bet to stay with this scent.
