Who's Next - Classic Album Discussion

The 1971 classic from The Who. This is some thunderous rock and roll. Keith Moon's drumming on any song made it seem like you were running just ahead of an avalanche. Take a nice, tuneful song like Going Mobile and Keith's drumming turns it into a monstrous good time "driving-song". Some of these songs are anthemic (i.e. Baba O'Riley) and some are just some great rockers (i.e. My Wife) and of course, Won't Get Fooled Again (which The Who brought new meaning to when they played it with a vengeance at Madison Square Garden after 9/11.)

A great album. A great band. A must for any rock and roll collection.

1971? Really trying to depress me, aren't you? Well, regardless of the age, this always sounds fresh to me. Incredible mastery of the instruments; has anyone else ever used a synth to rock like that? I know that no one has played the drums like that since Keith Moon left us. (And "My Wife" makes much more sense to me now than it did in 1971.)

I used to keep this in my Walkman all the time when I was 14 or 15, somewhere around there. Listened to it over and over on the bus to go skiing, on the lifts while skiing and on the slopes. Now, whenever I hear any of the songs from this album, I can clearly remember those times.

Some of them still come up on my favorite radio station from time to time, and they always transport me. Absolutely timeless. Thanks for the reminder.

Who's Next may lack some of the raw power of Live at Leeds, but it's one of the all time great rock albums. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see Keith Moon live, and to see Pete slide across the stage when Roger screamed at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again.

I recall their "farewell concert" at Shea Stadium, Oct. 13, 1982. The Clash opened for them.

It actually was "The Pete Townshend Show" that night...although Daltrey was animated and did the obligatory microphone swinging... John Entwistle barely moved 3 feet in any direction all night....

As for the classic album.... One of my absolute favs!

What a great band and album (it is playing on itunes as I type). Quadropheniais my favorite album by the who, but they have so many awesome albums. Keith is my favorite drummer.

I feel the Who are definitely underrated, and are often judged upon "My Generation". I believe that "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" are essential to any rock fan. "Who's Next" is also one of my favourites althought maybe it lacks the depth of the two albums mentioned earlier. John Entwistle reinvented the bass guitar and set the future direction for this (often ignored) instrument.

SCTV did a routine with two concert promoters arguing over the line-up: The Who, The Band, Yes, the Guess Who and the Byrds.

Great album. Look how many of the songs on it are well known Who hits. I always used to play this one on my system as loud as it would let me. I'm sad I never saw them live. Came of age in the eighties so I should have been able to see them on one of their many, many "last reunion ever" tours but I didn't.

Whoever booked them as a lead off act should have been fired by the headliners. The show occurred in Providence, RI. When they closed the show with My Generation, no one expected what happened. It was complete chaos with police and firemen on stage for crowd control and to extinguish things.

Then the headliners came on...Herman's Hermits. The rest is history.
