    Default Best Dovo?

I tried hunting through the old threads but couldn't find anything on this question so please forgive me if this has been asked before.

Is there a "general" (definitely meant loosely) consensus on the the best razor that Dovo makes? Regardless of price.

I understand this is somewhat subjective but for those members who have a number of Dovo razors, which performs the best overall?

Actually the old vintage Dovo's like the fritz bracht and Diamond Steel are far superior to what they make today however the stainless with the MOP scales is a very good shaver as is the bergisher lowe. Their best razor right now is probably the one with the mammoth scales. I guess the only one who can answer this question is someone who owns every blade type they make.

Let me try it this way...

Of all the currently made Dovos, if you could only buy one (I know perish the thought) which one would it be?

I only have experience with the 5/8 classic tortoise and the renaissance. Both are good shavers, but the renaissance is better.

I got 10 Dovo's -8 different models that I can remember anyhow, I will have to agree if I had to choose 1 the MOP may be the best overall, but while the tortoise special was one of the cheaper if not cheapest Dovo's I have it is also a great shaver

  10. Default Best DOVO? Very difficult to answer:

I've 16 different DOVO razors and they are all excellent razors.
In contrast to a Thiers Issard, which I also own quite a few, the honing is always very consequent. Each DOVO is honed by the same amount of strokes on the Coticule, followed by the same amount on the diamond paste induced balsa wood and stroped. The same treatment also to the stainless razors!
When properly honed and stroped, DOVO razors become extremely sharp and hold very well their edge for weeks only by stroping 30 times on the canvas followed by 30 laps on the leather before shaving.
I really can count on my 5 fingers the time that I needed to hone on a Coticule. Honing on the balsa wood with diamond paste .5 and .25 was all that was needed after buying a new razor.
I really cannot tell which is better. Which is more beatiful? This is a matter of taste...and money. My cheapest (52 Euro) DOVO razor with the black cellidur handle is as sharp as my singing razor ("Prima Klang" razors), but has no gold wash.
What I can say is that the "Silver Steel" razor with the ebony handle is mirror polished and has a "real" silver shine...

I have the Dovo "Best Quality" with the black scales. They may not produce that model any longer. It is their cheapest razor but shaves very well.

Great razors - but you have to buy one knowing you'll lose the rubber finger grip, and the gold spine.

That's true. Mine's now wearing a coat of POR-15 where the grip used to be, though it's still got most of the gold on the spine. But it's still my best shaving Dovo.

    Question RE: Bergisher Lowe

Can you remove the rubber thumb grip thing yourself? I don't like the look of it, and to be quite frank, I'd worry about what was going on under there re; water, etc.

Would it look bad to remove it? IE: is there just regular non-gold metal underneath?

I'm not fond of gold, but I think it actually looks nice on the Bergisher Lowe. Too bad it isn't permanent. Too bad that it also no doubt contributes to the final price, but I guess I'd have to live with that.

I just got a Dovo Perlex with Carbon Steel blade. I wanted to know where this fit in the mix. I really only care about the shave properties as I'm happy with the looks.

Good thread, but maybe someone can answer this for me: I though the deal with Dovo was that currently Dovo only made a couple of different qualities of blade--or lets same a very limited number of different qualities given that Dovo does have carbon and stainless, and I know the carbon comes in more than one quality, and I would guess that the stainless would, too. Not talking about widths, points, finishes, and the like. Just the quality of the steel and the edge.

With the conclusion being that the price differences are largely the scales. Which to me really means bang for the buck-wise it would be generally better to buy a Dovo with inexpensive scales and have one of the artisans on B&B re-scale it, unless one wanted to have that pure, authentic, from the factory MOP, just because it is the Dovo from the factory version.

Am I way off here? I suppose on some level the point makes no sense, though. The steel could be of the same inherent quality, but extra care taken with shaping and honing etc, could make a big long-term difference. Whatever it is, feel free to enlighten me!
