Thread: Newbie Check-In

  1. Default Newbie Check-In

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered a bunch of stuff from Classic Shaving:

    Merkur HD
    Merkur Blades
    Vulfix #403 Best Badger Brush
    Classic Shaving Mug
    Shaving Mug Soap Assortment
    Taylor Shave Shop Shaving Cream
Proraso Liquid Cream After Shave Balm
    Alum Block

While I was waiting for it to show up, I went to Target and got a tube of Prorasso Shaving Cream and a Proraso Boar Brush and decided to try my hand with my trusty old Mach 3. After about a week, I was getting perfect shaves using the new technique with the old Mach 3.

Tonight I gave the Badger Brush and the Merkur HD a whirl. Very impressed with the Badger. The HD is going to take a little getting used to. It was tricky maintaining a constant angle and pressure. No nicks or razor burn (except a nasty cut on my lip when my hand slipped), but the shave wasn't very close either. It's going to take some practice.

Yes, the first thing I did was watch all of mantics videos.

I feel like I need to unlearn about 20 years worth of bad shaving technique. Not only was I in the habit of really pressing down hard on the M3, but I'd also make repeated hacking up and down strokes as I would drag the blade across my face, like a stutter stroke.

    RTD,

Welcome to B&B...you'll certainly unlearn all those old razor habits you've acquired pretty darn quick with a DE. It does take time and practice with a DE to get it right, but when you do, you'll love it. Experiment & enjoy. Remember, NO PRESSURE..

    Rue,

You are right, it will take time to "unlearn" the past. But the day will come...

yes and may that day come quickly so you can put those "perfect" M3 shaves to shame. seriously you'll learn fast and never go back. just remeber not to try to get too close a shave too quick. thats where most people mess up they start to see how could their shaves could be then they try too hard to get those BBS smooth shaves. follow the "shoot for par" advice until your technique has had a few weeks to improve.

    welcome to B&B
