    Default Bill Nye's Stuff Happens

Bill Nye on his new show, Stuff Happens, stated that shaving gel in a can has enought butane that simply having 10% of households not using shaving gel could power a quarter of a million homes. As a solution he busted out the shaving soap and brush.

The show is on Planet Green.

Not to rag on Bill Nye, but let's do some quick math-

Let's say there are 100 million homes in the country (probably not too far off the mark). If 10% gave up canned goo, that would mean the butane from those 10 million homes could power a quarter of a million homes. In other words, you need the butane from the canned goo in forty homes to power one house. Now think of how many cans of goo you (used to, hupefully) use during the course of a year- not all that many. Ten? Now consider how much you're paying to heat and cool your home, not to mention cooking and avoiding the dark.

So if all it takes is the butane from a little more than a can of shaving cream a day, all I can say is that we should immediately give up on oil, natural gas, electricity, and whatever the hell else we've been squandering our money on, and adopt a canned goo model for the purposes of national security.

This one makes about as much sense as Barak's telling us to adjust the air in our tires.

It would be a lot more interesting if it were true.

Gross exaggeration seems rampent in this whole "save the environment" movement. These folks would gain a lot more followers if they would just "get real" and stick to scientific facts.

I personally, feel that I am environmentally aware and I try to consider this in making decisions in daily life, but I feel very alienated toward people who stoop to such unsupported statements in an attempt to make a point in favor of their cause.

I dont think it would be possible unless everyone would be running out all at the same time... thats to say its only probable if all 100 million of the populace is using it or obstaining from using it all at the same time ......
And then would sustain energy for maybe the moment, certainly not a year, not even a month....

quote- This one makes about as much sense as Barak's telling us to adjust the air in our tires.

Ahh, actually adjusting the tire pressure in your tires can give you a better miles per gallon rating.......In my own experience I've got +5 miles from a Escalade.......Although suspension suffers; harder tires make for the vehicle to roll better; but this is accompanied by less traction... so it all depends .. (YMMV)

What Bill Nye said may have been true, but we need to see the precise claim. Obviously "power a million homes" is too vague. Power for a day? For the time of a shave? Power lights? Air conditioning? American homes? Indian homes?

It would be interesting to see exactly what he is claiming.

True. Power is a measure of energy over time, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to assume that he meant "power continuously". Otherwise, it would be akin to saying that I can power an aircraft carrier for an attosecond on a burrito.

In the request for a temporary restraining order filed by Bill Nye against his wife of one year, Nye claims his estranged wife showed up at his Studio City home on Labor Day, dressed in black and armed with two large bottles "filled with some sort of solvent" to do damage to his garden, which he says provides "food produce," according to the handwritten documents.

Nye also alleges that the herbicide was "quite toxic" and thought Tindall might have squirted him in the eyes with it had she gotten closer. Nye's wife, Blair Tindal, responded to the order by describing the incident as a "foolish, sophomoric act of poor judgment" brought on by a series of personal and family problems. She also strongly denied being a threat to Nye, and accuses him of "emotional cruelty."

I think it's his bow tie that creeps me out. Or maybe it's the time I saw him on "Faces of Death" devouring a human liver. I'll figure it out one of these days.

Interesting if true. After such a claim, did he offer any sources to back up the claim?

I often hear amazing claims like that to save our planet, but never any sources that back it up. I should be happy, though. He could have said we should just stop shaving and grow beards to save water and everything else that goes into getting a good shave.

I never liked the stuff he did as Bill Nye the Science Guy.

I first saw him on a TV show in Seattle called Almost Live. It is live SNL but only funnier. The Science Guy persona was one little skit he would do from time to time. He was much better as a High Fiving White Guy or the Super Hero Speedwalker.
