  1. Default Report: First shave with a Feather!!!

Okay, so I have been reading for months about how "Sharp" and "Deadly" the feathers are and I must admit, I was pretty intimidated being a noob. Ordered a sample pack form Westcoast shaving a few months ago and tried everything in the pack EXCEPT for the feathers.

    My setup..
    Gillette O-1
    Feather blade
    Proraso Pre/Post
    C.O. Bigelow pre-shave oil
    Proraso shave cream
    AoS Lavender AS gel

Long story short, this morning I dropped a feather in my O-1 Gillette, adjusted it to #4 and went for it. At first I was more nervous than a virgin on her wedding night.

Pass #1 (wtg)...no problem, no nicks.

Pass #2 (xtg)...no problem, no nicks

    Pass #3 (atg)... OMG...

    Final pass... (wtg w/touch up)...OMG

Finished up with Proraso post & Alum block with a cold water splash and HOLY TA-MOLY!!!!! This was THE best shave I have ever had.

Thanks to all of you DE vets for the words of wisdom.

Looks like I'm now a dedicated Feather man! ***Ordering a stock of Feathers now***

Question: Does this mean I'm no longer considered noobie?

    Thanks

Congrats on your survival of the Feather I felt the same way the first time I loaded one up. They really are good blades but I don't get the hype about being so sharp. As with any blade as long as your careful and patient you will be just fine. So don't be afraid to try any blade that catches your interest.

Very nice. I was about to start my own thread on the same topic, but no need.
I had the same experience as you. I use a Merkur HD, Tabac soap, and the C&E Edwin Jagger $35 best badger brush.

I got the blade sample packs today, and went straight for the Feather.
I thought I could detect less drag, and more smooth cutting. I guess they are sharper than other blades from what I've read here...that could be, but no nicks, just a nice smooth shave.

This place is great for getting suggestions on various shave gear! Thanks so much, everyone.

It's weird, I tried Feathers, and I seemed to get loads of cuts, despite it actually being quite a good shave. Perhaps I was applying too much pressure - after all it was early days - so I'll be sure to give them another try next.

Make sure to use the Feathers for a few days, maybe a week or two, before you annoint them as your new blade and order 1000 of them.

Probably good advice, but I would have to agree, the Feather's reputation for a sharp blade and a close shave is well deserved. Five or six blades under my belt, and the YMMV is very much in full play for me. I do not think I have had one nick from a Feather - while others say their face is left raw and bloody by the 'vicious unforgiving' Feathers. <looks for wood to knock on>

I think as much as anything it is the low drag that the Feather allows that makes it a blade of choice for me. That said, I have some Iridiums and Polsilvers heading this way, and I should have some UK Wilkinson Sword Classics on the way soon, as well. (My parents/friends think I am stocking up for Armegeddon)
