  1. Default Is there a Price guide ??

    Hi Guys

I am just curious if there is a reasonable price guide to razors. I am well aware that prices are subjective and are what the market will bear . I am looking for it mainly to flush out the good ones from the bad ones and to be able to identify what I have .In every hobby there is usually a price "Bible " that the hobby uses as its go to guide . In antiques it Kovels , Sports cards is beckett ,What is it in the Razor hobby ?? Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this and possibly have some input.

I don't think there's an actual "Blue Book" for razors as there is for used cars. However, check the following.

If you want a particular vintage razor, follow several that are on sale at eBay. The average selling price will give you an idea of what that particular razor is worth. This doesn't necessarily apply to very unusual or rare models.

Similarly watch the Buy-Sell-Trade forum here. Watch the razor you like. If the selling price is too high, no one will buy; the seller will likely reduce his price to the point where some lucky watcher will snap it up. That's most likely the selling price for that razor in that shape.

Also, punch the name of your desired razor, e.g., "Fatboy Adjustable" into the Advanced Search function at the right hand top of the forum, and punch in to search only the "BST Forum." You'll see what Fatboys have sold for over the last year.

Default Price Guide for Safety Razors

Actually, there is a price guide for safety razors. Unfortunately, it was published in 1995 and, as far as I know, it hasn't been updated, so the actual prices shown are open to question.

It was published by L-W Book Sales in Gas City, IN. I notice it is still listed on Amazon.com from some of their third party vendors. You can search for "Safety Razors a price guide" on Amazon.

    Regards,
    Tom

The market for buying and selling safety razors is very limited, and has fluctuated quite a bit as members praise or criticize certain razors at the main shaving sites. Plus, the average prices for given razors is radically different locations: a razor that wouldn't sell for more that $5 at an antique shop will go for $50 on the bay.

We've put in place a requirement that sales threads on the BST forum not be edited to remove the sale price, so you can search the past sales for some info.

Mind you, the market does fluctuate depending on how quickly interest in wetshaving grows ... and on what is the 'hot' brand.
Be there or be square. Only I can do both!
I've got a cat named Beefeater and a dog named Beefeater, and two goldfish called Beefeater and Beefeater. There's Beefeater my hamster and Beefeater my horse, and my piglet, known as Beefeater of course.

If the prices on eBay are any reflection, the going rate for an early vintage Super Speed is somewhere between 'an arm' and 'a leg'.

The market has gone mad and there seems to be a fair bit of arbitrage going on. I'm surprised none of the many books on antiques and vintage collectibles include a section on safety and straight razors.
