Regular lotion vs. Aftershave balm

Newbie here. After my shave this morning (just my 3rd DE shave, getting closer to a DFS ), I was left with a some redness and dryness (I tend to have dry skin anyway). I put some Aveeno lotion on my face, and that helped.

Now to my question: How does regular lotion (something like Aveeno lotion) compare to a dedicated aftershave balm (something like Brut or Nivea)?

I also have occasional trouble with acne, so whatever I use should be noncomedogenic.

most Balm's that I've seen contain ingredients geared more towards aftershave care, like Witchhazel for example... At least in my experience... The other thing is, many lotions are non non-cog errr non-codge uhhh... Whatever the word I'm trying to think of... In other words, many lotions are not made to go on your face because their ingredients will clog pores whereas an actual balm obviously will not.

With that said, as long as the lotion is made for the face I suppose there's no real reason you can't use it as an aftershave other than the fact that it may not really "function" as an aftershave (closing pores, etc)
