Shaving with the skin taut

Ok, this is something I have noticed for a while now yet have not really questioned it until now. Basically if I have my cheek pulled tight, the razor doesn't glide as well and almost seems to tug. If I leave my skin be then the razor goes over effortlessly. The trade off here is that I like getting a close shave which requires me to pull my skin tight but when I do so, it causes irritation. Any thoughts?

Just give a small amount of tension to the skin, get a nice clean pass, relather and repeat , works for me.

Just very lightly pull on skin; too tight and you defeat the purpose; try just tilting/turning head to tighten skin.
