    Default Scuttle Question (again)

As folks have seen, i've been narrowing my collection (quickly built.. had 30 - 40 razors, 20 - 30 soaps, 3 brushes, etc in less than a month) to those items that i am extremely overjoyed with..
One item that I really love is very nice warm lather. To accomplish thus far, I have purchased a $7.00 hot pot, and get boiling H2O which I pour in an outer large cereal bowl with a smaller cereal bowl 'floating' in it..
What I would really appreciate is a scuttle, but want one that is the best at keeping the lather hot (guess I would be willing to fill my wifes sink w/ boiling H2O and keep the "boiling h2o filled scuttle" in that, but would like to avoid)..

    Thoughts on the best????

I have the Georgetown G3 and am very happy with it.
    Good things about it-
Beautiful piece-Hamada and Persimmon in color
Very heavy construction which maintains heat well
Large enough to lather in even with a large brush
Nice ridges in bottom to help with the lathering
    Negatives-
the actual water capacity is small-not alot of room inside for the water
the inner bowl is connected to the base?
If you do use boiling water it does still work very well

Overall I am very pleased but if the water capacity was larger and completely surrounded the bowl I would be set! I have heard of this DirtyBird scuttle but still havent seen a picture yet

    1+ for the Georgetown Scuttle

I find that even though the water capacity is small. My brush and lather stays warm for over a 1/2 hour.
I love mine, besides the practical , it looks great as well.

If you are not interested in using boiling water to keep your water warm, then the Dirty Bird scuttle may be your answer. It holds much more water than the Georgetown and keeps the lather warm using just the hot water from your faucet.

I had a custom one made from a lovely women in Georgia. It is two piece as I like a bowl but was tired of filling the sink with hot water. I simple fill it with hot water both in the base and in the bowl and soak my brush. Once I get out of the shower I dump the water and fill it one more time just with hot tap water. I can remove the bowl to whip up som lather or leave it in as the is a notch to hold it in place. Gaye did a wondeful job and is willing to do more. She also added grooves in the bowl that really helps build lather.
    Heres a couple pics.

Oskar's scuttle is great. Read the reviews above. Its heft does a VERY nice job of holding heat. I soak mine in a sink of hot water while showering, and then fill it with boiling water just before shipping. The hot lather is wonderful.

    Wayne,

We all share the same sickness With that said I wanted a scuttle and came up with my own version. I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and found the mug pictured. After using it for a while I noticed Target had a small ceramic bowl that would fit inside and for months it worked very well. However, I wanted a scuttle and purchased a Moss scuttle. It is better looking but the results are practically the same. I think the whole set cost around 10.00 and the Moss was 50.00.

Great replies folks.. It's funny that, even on Scuttle's YMMV.. I like the looks of the Georgetown, Oskars and the Moss. Thirdeye's custom had me drooling when I first saw it, an no different know.. I 'thought' I saw pics of the Dirtybird on another forum, though can't quite remember...So, like you said, Mojo88... sounds like my current setup (much like what you had Target.. where I purchased mine) I don't mind paying a bit for the aesthetics IF it works well!

I'm fortunate to have a friend that is lending me his G3... will see what I think..

Does any one have a picture of the Dirty Bird scuttle? Seen reviews and comments but no pics?

    Svirre,

Thank you!!! This thing is going to mean some serious competition for the other guys out there. I remember that the price is right as well. It appears to be one piece? Is that correct? Resevoir looks alot bigger as well.

    Svirre,

What are the dimensions of the inner bowl?

I haven´t had a chance to try it yet. I´m on vacation, so the scuttle is eagerly awaiting me at my local post office! I do believe it´s in one piece, yes. I´m looking forward to see how it preforms compared to my other four scuttles.

    From the Dirty Bird homepage:

    Large handle for secure grip
    Large spout for easy filing
    12+ oz. water reservoir
Deep ridges to top of lather bowl
    Outer bowl 5" wide x 3.5" high
    Lather bowl 3.5" wide x 2" deep
    One piece construction
    (2 piece by special order)

The scuttle I have from Dirty Bird is exactly like the one shown in blue. Mine holds over 16 oz of hot water in the reservoir. The Georgetown I had,a version 2, was a beautiful piece of pottery but the Dirty Bird does a better job of keeping the lather warm. I can easily get four passes of warm lather and with the Georgetown I was lucky to get two.

I have a G3 and it's a fantastic piece of pottery. My only small gripe has been the water capacity in the reservoir. I measured mine and it only holds 3.5 oz. The Dirty Bird is advertised at 12+ oz. Plus, the sides of the Dirty Bird are a little taller which would help hold the lather in. I have a Simpsons Chubby 2 and when the lather gets going off that bad boy, it often spills over the sides.

But, even at 3.5 oz of water, I'm still good for 3 passes. I fill the reservoir and bowl with boiling water from a kettle before I get in the shower and when I get out I fill the reservoir back up and it keeps the lather pretty warm.

    My custom G3:
....Had them do a old fashioned hand drawing and thought it turned out pretty good....

    Love the Air Force painting..
I think I'm going to go w/ the 'dirty bird' given the depth of the bowl.. sounds like the design will result in warmer lather.. May just have to give my wife the cereal bowls back (DADDY, my Fruit Loops taste like lather!)

if your main reason is the depth of the bowl......isn't the Georgetown inner bowl a half inch deeper???

Just from reading the dimensions on these sites:

    http://www.dirtybirdpottery.com/potteryandhoney.html

    http://www.georgetownpottery.com/sto...y_Code=Shaving

The Georgetown is 2.5 in. deep for the inner bowl, whereas the Dirtybird is 2 in. deep. Just thought I'd point that out, in case that was in fact the main reason for your choice. However, if it is the size of the reservoir, it seems that the Dirtybird has a larger capacity for sure.

Great point shiny ... size of reservoir is a consideration also, though I was confused on bowl depth.. thank you for posting that... I see a few folks have both .. my "main" desire is to keep the lather hot for 4 passes.. Maybe I'm still 'off' on my thinking (won't be the last time, I'm sure).. I would 'think' that the depth of the bowl (more surface directly in contact w/ hot H2O) and the capacity of the reservoir (simply more H20 which would result in slower cooling) would make the difference.. am I wacky on this ?

I'm completely happy with the scuttle that was made for me by PeachScuttles. Here's the sizes and capacities as noted in one of my earlier posts:

The inner bowl stands about 2 1/4 inches tall and 5 1/4 inches in diameter at its widest. Inside it measures about 3 inches across at the narrowest part of the bottom of the bowl, which would be almost big enough for most soaps. It has a volume of a bit over 1 1/3 cups.

The outer bowl stands about 3 inches tall and is 5 1/4 inches across, matching up well with the lip of the inner bowl. The circular foot of the bowl is 3 3/4 inches in diameter. It has a volume of 1 1/4 cups before the inner bowl begins to float. Without the inner bowl it has a volume of three cups.

I'm sure that Gaye can adjust the dimensions/design to meet someone's personal needs since her scuttles (and everything else she makes) are hand-thrown.

The water in my scuttle can begin to cool before my shave is over, but my lather stays plenty warm for 4+ passes if I desire. Also, it's easy enough to remove the inner bowl and replace the water with hotter water without worrying about watering down the lather. It's the best of both worlds for me - a bowl for creating lather and a scuttle for keeping it warm.

To top it off I get the pleasure of working with a local artist who creates exceptional pieces of work. I look forward to adding more of her pieces to my collection.
A good day starts with a good shave
