Default The knot fell out of my beloved old dubl duck brush! What epoxy should I use?

I don't use it much any more, but yesterday my sweetie asked if she could try some of my stuff to wet shave with. All in all a very fun morning.

Well I have an old Dubl Duck Barber shop type brush that I bought nearly 18 years ago. Since we would be covering a bit more skin than just my face, I chose it because it is huge. After all the festivities were over (she is now a convert and it looks like we will be buying her some shave gear) I was cleaning up the old Dubl Duck and the knot fell out of it and plopped into the sink.

The knot is still intact, but it looks like the epoxy cracked right behind the actual knot. I would like to repair it, but I am not sure what kind of adhesive to use.

    Any tips?

Any good epoxy should do the job.

In my experience, the ones with set times under 1-5 minutes do not hold as well as those with 5min+ set times.

Other than that I think anything from the hardware store should do the trick. They have marine epoxy that will mix and set under water, but I don't know if they actually hold any better once hard.

    Regards.

I wouldn't even think it makes any diff whether you use waterproof epoxy or not, unless you care whether the repair last 15 or twenty years. Epoxy is pretty tough stuff.

I use marine grade epoxy, might not be necessary, but they see their share of water.

I have found that E6000 epoxy does an excellent job on the two occassions I have used it for ancient restorations.. Waterproof, the only drawback is that it takes a while (12-24 hours) to set. I think this slow setting/curing is prbably the underlying reason for its strength and durability.
    Best regards,

I like Gorilla Glue for this. It expands while it sets and seals very well. You just need to allow proper drying time.

I am going to have to look up that E6000 epoxy. I don't care if it takes a month to set up, as long as it works.

The gorilla glue idea is apealing since I aleady have a bottle.
    Anyone else tried it?

    Thanks for the replies folks!

Should be pretty good. Doesn't that actually need water to cure? Go for it. Worst case, the knot falls out again and you need to find a better glue.

It should be noted about gorilla glue that it will foam up and expand as it dries

I'm not a huge fan of the gorilla glue for applications where it will come into repeated exposure to water.

Pick a good marine epoxy, follow the instructions and you'll be good.

My choice would be JB Weld. I used it to glue a patch in the oil pan in my car several years ago. Still going strong....

This just happened to me about 2 weeks ago on my AOS bagder brush.
Marine Epoxy, set in about 2 hours and brush was as good as new.

I have a brush where the knot was just a tad smaller than the hole in the handle and the knot fell out. I used epoxy a couple of times and it still fell out. About 6 months ago I used Gorilla Glue and its been fine. You just wet the surface when you apply it and it expands as it dries. Its totally waterproof. Just don't use too much.
