Default Does using cologne mean no Aqua Velva?

Posted this in the AS forum, to no avail. Let's try here - I love the feel of Aqua Velva and Clubman. However, I also have an appreciation for Penhaligons, Creed and other cologne scents. Does my enjoyment of cologne mean that I have to forgo the cooling AV and instead stick to scentless witch hazel? I would hate for my GIT to get stepped on by AV, creating a cacophony of olfactory confusion.

AV is quite fleeting (on me) so I can splash and enjoy the cooling feeling and still wear a Cologne which takes over once the AV has gone.

It's a different story with Clubman though. This lasts MUCH longer than AV so is best worn on its own.

There are other aftershaves which lie on one or other side of this divide.

I think if the AV is blatantly interfering with your cologne, then you're probably using too much.

On the flip side, I've found that AV doesn't interfere many of my colognes. You'll just have to experiment.

+1. Go easy on the menthol bomb, my friend. Very few AS I use stand on their own: the Pinauds and Acqua di Gio come to mind. The rest are fleeting scents.

I've found that I just use a small shake, then spread evenly by rubbing my hands together, then I kind of press my hands over my cheeks and neck. I get enough of a kick to enjoy it, but not so much that anyone within a few feet is knocked out. And my face feels great.. they might be called a "splashes" but really, I seldom, if ever, find the need to actually splash aftershaves on my face.

But OTOH, I'm not one who gets actual razor burn very often..

I've found that AV Classic blue dissapates very quickly so I apply any ET I want. Evey other AV I've tried lingers (Ice Sport, Musk, Canadian Green Sport) so I don't use them when applying an EDT

With the exception of not trying the musk, I agree 100%, but will say that despite the other varietals lingering more than the flagship Classic Ice Blue, they still do not detract from my fragrance o' day.

Another approach would be to make sure the AS and cologne are complimentary, no?

(Did I mention a great day I had yesterday, using Pinaud Clubman and Penhaligon's Douro?

I also like DR Harris Arlington AS with Penhaligon's Castile edt, FWIW.)

Thanks, all. I do like to apply plenty of AV - I want the 'burn' to get into every pore. But if the volume is too much, making it last longer, then I'll have to adjust.

I guess I figure that the AV will fade no matter how much is applied. The amount put on would just control how far the initial scent projects. But the fade time should be the same, regardless of how much put on. But that's just my theory.

Clubman, I guess there's no way around. It's a standalone.

As for the combos (Clubman-Duoro, etc), I'll have to start a new thread on that. Today is a boring 1805 cream/AS balm/EDT theme day. No venturing in that, but mmmmmm.

    • First, if it is a fleeting scent don't worry about scents colliding.
    • Second, a lot of people call it "colognes", which is a concentration of a perfume.
    • Third, it is all where you apply it.

The concentrations of fragrances are, from strongest to weakest:

    • perfume
    • eau de perfume
    • eau de toilette
    • eau de cologne
    • aftershave

Some aftershaves may linger, but generally they are gone quickly.
The concentrations are guaranteed levels. It is a quality guaranty.
If I buy a Old Spice Eau de toilette I have the guaranty that the concentration of essential oil/fragrence is stronger then their eau de cologne, and a guaranteed minimum concentration.
Also important is for what purpose you are wearing it.
Perfume is so strong you won't find it in stores.
It is so strong that with a 10-15 min shower you would still smell it. Probably the next morning as well.
Eau de perfume can be found in stores and is marketed to women, it is really strong.
    A soap-less 10 min shower won't remove the smell.
Eau de toilette is my favorite, it should last you a work day. It is best used for general daily wear.
I estimate it should last about 6-9 hours. Colognes are weaker, I estimate that they last about 2-5 hours.
Colognes are ideal if you want to wear it on a night out.
Or if you want to wear a different scent to work then in the evening.
You could use a mild, timeless, non-offending cologne to work, while later that evening have a more daring cologne at a dinner party. Or only want to wear something for work, or only something for the evening.
I like fleeting after shave after which I apply a eau de toilette.
I would only buy a cologne if I really like the scent and they don't sell a eau de toilette in that line.
That doesn't mean it's the right use, I just personally prefer eau de toilette's over colognes buy far.

    How, wear to apply:
Aftershave, of course, at the face. I also apply at the throat and jawline.
Eau de cologne/toilette is best applied at places where the heart throbs, in particular the arteries in the neck.
Spray/apply a few drops at both arteries. Apply a bit at the wrist.
Another strategical, extra place to apply is at the crown of the head.
The throbbing will keep on lifting particles, making them airborne threw the day.
I don't want to sound preachy and I understand it is very normal for Americans or those with the English language as mother tongue to call stronger scents that are worn "colognes". Nothing wrong with that.
I hope this rambling will help anybody who reads it. After all it too is a small part of the grooming and shaving.
No doubt you can find more info in the Fragrance part of the B&B fora.

    Lol you're right!
I forget I did a search for Aqua Velva.
I usually have multiple tabs open (like one with the brushes section, another razors, soaps & this time also a search).

You love Creed, and you love Clubman?

I know Clubman gets lots of love here, but I really really despise it. I would not mix the two. But every other AS I've tried lasts about 30 seconds tops. You should be fine.

Hah, AV sticks around for DAYS on me.
One splash in the a.m., and I'll smell it coming off in waves when I shower the next morning.

Yes it is a minimum, and is seen as a quality grade. Not sure if it is a defined maximum by law as well.
If not then they might add more because they prefer to give a better "quality" aftershave.
The chemical make up, type of scent and quality of the ingredients used are also of influence on it's "staying power"

I love Clubman as well, but I think it's so strong that not only do I cut it with WH, it can also be used undiluted as cologne IMHO. If you can still smell it at the end of the day, who cares wheather it's called an 'aftershave', it could still be used as a cologne on days you wear a milder AS!

Forgo Classic Ice Blue Aqua Velva? Absolute madness! Forgo oxygen? Yes. forgo water & food? Most definitely. But the manly, refreshing vigor of AV? Ludicrous! ;)

I'm not as bad as that, but scents do stick with me as well. AV will stick with me for HOURS.
